The Network Engineer (Firewall Specialist) is responsible for the design, implementation, support, and optimisation of secure network infrastructure across the Trust. The post holder will lead on firewall configuration, network security, and access control, ensuring the availability, integrity, and confidentiality of clinical and corporate systems. This role is critical in maintaining resilient and secure connectivity to support patient care, in line with NHS Digital standards and cybersecurity frameworks.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and support secure network infrastructure, with a primary focus on firewall technologies.
- Manage, configure, and maintain enterprise firewalls (e.g. Checkpoint, Fortinet, Cisco ASA/Firepower).
- Monitor network performance and security, proactively identifying and resolving issues.
- Lead on firewall rule management, including audits, optimisation, and documentation.
- Ensure compliance with NHS security standards, including DSPT, Cyber Essentials Plus, and relevant ISO frameworks.
- Support incident response for network-related security events and breaches.
- Work closely with Cyber Security, Infrastructure, and Clinical Systems teams to ensure secure system integrations.
- Contribute to disaster recovery and business continuity planning.
- Provide technical input into network design for new projects, including cloud and hybrid environments (e.g. Azure, HSCN connectivity).
- Maintain accurate network documentation, diagrams, and configuration records.
- Provide 3rd line support and act as an escalation point for complex network issues.
- Participate in on-call rota where required.
