We are looking for an experienced Cabling & Infrastructure Engineer to undertake structured cabling and network infrastructure installations across our customer sites. The primary focus will be installing, terminating, testing and maintaining Cat5e and Cat6 structured cabling. The successful candidate should also be comfortable installing communications cabinets and working with switches, routers, wireless access points and other network equipment. Experience with fibre cabling and wireless point-to-point installations would be particularly valuable. Previous exposure to CCTV or access-control systems would be useful but is not required. This is a hands-on field position requiring someone who can complete installations neatly, safely and professionally while working independently at customer premises.

Key responsibilities

  • Install, route and terminate Cat5e and Cat6 structured cabling through offices, warehouses, ceiling spaces, floor voids and suitable containment.
  • Install trunking, conduit, cable baskets, network outlets, modules, patch panels and RJ45 connectors.
  • Install and organise communications cabinets, racks, patch panels and cable-management equipment.
  • Test, label and document completed cable runs, diagnosing and repairing damaged or poorly performing connections.
  • Trace existing cabling, complete basic site surveys and identify suitable routes, materials and equipment while following relevant safety and installation standards.

Fibre infrastructure

  • Install internal and external fibre-optic cabling, patch panels, enclosures and termination boxes.
  • Terminate, splice or connect fibre cabling and associated equipment.
  • Test fibre links and assist with diagnosing fibre connectivity faults.

Fibre experience is desirable rather than essential where the candidate has strong copper-cabling experience and is willing to undertake further training.

Network and wireless installations

  • Install and mount switches, routers, wireless access points, communications cabinets, power-distribution units and related infrastructure.
  • Patch equipment into the correct cabinet and switch ports and assist technical engineers with network deployments and equipment replacements.
  • Install external wireless access points and assist with wireless point-to-point and point-to-multipoint deployments.
  • Route and terminate external-grade or shielded network cabling and install associated mounting equipment.

Advanced configuration of switches, routers and wireless systems is not a primary requirement. However, the engineer should understand how the equipment connects and be able to follow a supplied deployment plan.

Essential experience and skills

  • Practical experience installing, terminating and testing Cat5e and Cat6 structured cabling.
  • Experience using appropriate cable-testing equipment and diagnosing physical connectivity faults.
  • Ability to route cables and install containment neatly and safely.
  • Familiarity with switches, routers and wireless access points, supported by a basic understanding of network connectivity.
  • Ability to read network diagrams, installation plans and port schedules.
  • Confidence using hand tools, power tools, ladders and cabling equipment while working independently at customer sites.
  • Strong problem-solving, organisation, communication and customer-service skills, with a full UK driving licence and willingness to travel.

The role also requires the ability to carry equipment and undertake the physical activities reasonably associated with cabling and infrastructure installations.

Desirable experience

  • Fibre-optic or Cat6a installation, termination, splicing and testing.
  • Cable-certification equipment, formal test reporting and external-grade cabling.
  • Wireless point-to-point installations, external wireless equipment, VoIP, IP CCTV or access-control systems.
  • Relevant cabling, fibre, networking or health and safety qualifications, including ECS, CSCS, IPAF or PASMA.

Previous experience working for a telecommunications provider, network installer or IT services company would be advantageous.

Personal qualities

We are looking for someone reliable, organised and punctual who takes pride in completing neat and professional installations. You should take ownership of your work, communicate clearly with customers and colleagues, treat customer premises with care and understand that an installation is not complete until it has been properly terminated, tested, labelled and documented. The successful candidate should be able to work independently without compromising safety or quality, adapt between planned projects and urgent repair work, and be willing to develop their networking, fibre and wireless-infrastructure skills.

What we offer

  • Company vehicle or business mileage allowance, depending on the arrangement.
  • Company laptop, tools and testing equipment.
  • Workplace pension and holiday entitlement.
  • Relevant training and professional-development opportunities.
  • Opportunities to develop your skills and take responsibility for larger infrastructure projects.
