We are looking for a dedicated Helpdesk / Switchboard Operator to join our team and provide an exceptional level of service across all hospital locations.
Responsibilities
- As a Switchboard Operator, you will be the first point of contact for internal and external calls, handling a wide range of enquiries, emergencies, and administrative support tasks.
- You will manage call routing, emergency alerts, bleep systems, and alarm systems, while maintaining patient confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
- Answer and transfer incoming and internal calls promptly, courteously, and accurately.
- Operate hospital switchboard equipment, including PABX, alarm systems, and bleep/paging systems.
- Respond to emergencies such as medical emergencies (2222 calls), cardiac arrests, violent patient incidents, and fire alarms.
- Maintain accurate records in incident books, bleep logs, and switchboard documentation.
- Support hospital staff with information and system assistance, including directory enquiries, taxi/transport requests, and on-call notifications.
- Assist with the management of bleep assignments, replacements, and redirections.
- Follow Major Incident Plans and emergency protocols as required.
- Uphold confidentiality, data protection, and Trust governance policies.
About You
- Previous experience in a healthcare or high-volume switchboard environment is desirable.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and respond quickly to emergencies.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Flexibility to work shifts, including nights, weekends, and public holidays.
- Competence with IT and telecommunication systems.
- Aware of and compliant with NHS data protection and confidentiality standards.
