The Opportunity
Our client is supporting a major UK Government Agency on the delivery of a strategic geospatial data platform and is seeking an experienced Senior Geospatial Engineer to join a multidisciplinary Agile team on an initail 6-month temporaray contract.
This is an exciting opportunity to help design, build and support modern cloud-native geospatial data services that underpin critical national decision-making.
You'll play a key role in developing scalable geospatial processing pipelines, integrating spatial datasets from multiple sources and delivering high-quality services for analytics, reporting and operational applications.
Working alongside Data Engineers, Architects, GIS specialists and Product teams, you'll contribute to the development of robust geospatial engineering capabilities using modern cloud technologies, open-source GIS tooling and industry-standard spatial APIs.
Skills and Experience
Essential
- Strong commercial experience as a Geospatial Engineer, GIS Engineer, Spatial Data Engineer or similar
- Excellent understanding of modern geospatial data engineering principles
- Experience designing and supporting scalable cloud-based geospatial platforms
- Strong knowledge of geospatial formats including: Geo Package / Geo TIFF / Cloud Optimised Geo TIFF (COG) / Flat Geobuf / PMTiles
- Experience developing geospatial processing workflows
- Strong SQL and programming skills
- Hands-on experience with open-source geospatial technologies including: GDAL / QGIS / Open Layers
- Experience consuming and publishing REST and OGC-compliant spatial APIs
- Experience optimising spatial datasets for large-scale production environments
- Understanding of software engineering best practice including testing, version control and CI/CD
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
Desirable
Experience with one or more of the following would be advantageous

Role and Responsibilities
- Design, build and support scalable geospatial data pipelines and services.
- Develop solutions for ingesting, transforming, validating, storing and publishing spatial datasets.
- Work with a wide variety of geospatial formats, ensuring data quality, performance and interoperability.
- Develop and optimise cloud-native geospatial workflows for large-scale datasets.
- Consume and publish spatial services using REST and OGC standards.
- Contribute to technical architecture, engineering standards and best practice.
- Optimise geospatial datasets and APIs for performance, scalability and resilience.
- Collaborate with Data Engineers, GIS specialists, Architects and Product teams within an Agile delivery environment.
- Support automated testing, CI/CD pipelines and engineering quality practices.
- Contribute to technical documentation, peer reviews and continuous improvement initiatives.
NB: The successful candidate will be required to undergo a basic level of security clearance before undertaking the assignment (one to two weeks’ lead-time).
