At ISHA, community and neighbourhood mean everything to us, and our roots run deep in the areas of north and east London that we serve. Founded over 90 years ago, we provide around 2,500 homes for over 5,000 people across Islington, Hackney and Waltham Forest. We are proud to remain a community-based housing association with a strong social purpose and an ambitious future.

As our new Director of Development and Building Safety, you will join ISHA at an important and exciting point in our journey. With a new corporate strategy now underway, a strengthened leadership structure, and significant investment and growth planned across our services, neighbourhoods and systems, this is a rare opportunity to shape the future of a well-respected organisation that is committed to building genuinely affordable homes and delivering excellent resident services.

Reporting to the Chief Executive and sitting on the Leadership Team, you will lead the development, building safety and compliance teams. You will also have responsibility for sales, commercial, energy and procurement. This is a broad strategic role with significant influence, but also one that requires someone willing to work closely with teams, build capability and help drive continuous improvement across the business.

You will oversee a capable development function that has and continues to punch above its weight, with an exciting pipeline of affordable high-quality homes in our London heartlands, and a newly formed Building Safety and Compliance team that ensures the safe management of all our buildings and keeps residents safe. This is a challenging role, but one that offers the ability to drive and see real change. It includes managing various high profile remediation projects, engaging with residents, contractors, regulators, funders and other stakeholders to deliver successful outcomes.

For all this you will need to be strategic and operational, with the ability to hit the ground running and get stuck in. This is not a standing start, we have a lot of programmes in flight, and we want you to bring your wealth of experience and help shape them from day one. To do all this would expect you to be a true homes and investment specialist, having senior experience in new build development and remediation and property and compliance. Having worked in a housing association or comparable organisation at an exec or leadership team level, with Boards and funders is also a must.

At ISHA, we are ambitious about the future while remaining grounded in our communities and values. We are looking for a leader who shares our commitment to continuous improvement, resident focus and creating an inclusive and supportive culture for colleagues and residents alike.

About the role

  • Lead ISHA’s development, building safety and compliance teams
  • Lead high profile remediation programmes related to fire safety and other issues
  • Shape a newly formed building safety and compliance team to deliver first class services for residents and the business
  • Establish a well-run procurement and energy function
  • Support the organisation’s long-term resilience, investment priorities and growth ambitions
  • Work closely with the Board, Property Investment Committee and Leadership Team
  • Develop high-performing, collaborative and customer-focused teams
  • Drive continuous improvement across all processes, reporting and organisational insight

About you

  • Senior leadership experience in property and development in a comparable organisation
  • Experience working with Boards, auditors, funders and regulators and negotiating with contractors
  • Able to balance strategic thinking with operational delivery
  • Passionate about culture, collaboration and developing people

Why join ISHA?

  • A genuinely community-based and values-led organisation
  • Strong social purpose and commitment to affordable housing
  • New corporate strategy and clear organisational ambition with a commitment to growth in our heartlands
  • Opportunity to shape newly formed building safety and compliance team and drive organisational improvement
  • Flexible and supportive working culture with hybrid working arrangements
  • Competitive pension and benefits package
