Islington Council has a number of exciting opportunities for qualified domestic gas engineers within its in-house repairs and maintenance service.
Main duties of the job:
- Completing annual landlord gas safety checks to approximately 10 properties in the north of the borough.
- Responsible for completing responsive breakdown repairs.
- Daily interaction with customers, requiring excellent interpersonal skills.

Reporting to the Senior Mechanical Engineer, the Domestic Gas Engineer will play a key role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of domestic gas appliances within the borough.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities:
- This role attracts an additional 12% salary shift enhancement.
- To carry out a range of gas work on domestic systems and appliances within the Council's housing stock.
- Responsible for ensuring all work is completed to a high standard, maintaining good first-time fix rates.
- Carry out routine landlord gas safety checks as well as fault diagnosis, repairs, and installation of parts.
- Undertake all functions associated with their role as part of a contractual out of hours rota.
Person specification:
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:
- Considerable proven post qualification experience of servicing/repair and inspection of domestic gas appliances; and/or considerable proven experience of working within a 3-star Gas Maintenance Contract.
- Current Gas Safe registration.
- Qualifications: City & Guilds, NVQ Level 2 or equivalent and have ACS Qualifications CCN1, CEN1, HTR1, Wat1, CHR1, CPA1.
- Multi-skills training to a minimum of NVQ3 or a willingness to be trained when employed by LBI.
- Detailed knowledge of gas ventilation, installation and repair of domestic gas systems and appliances.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITY:
- Detailed knowledge of health and safety legislation, codes of practice and British Standards in relation to gas safety.
- Comprehensive awareness of good construction safety practices and the application of safe systems of work.
- Ability to organise own workload, appropriately prioritising, ordering necessary materials and working unsupervised.
- Logical and methodical approach to problem solving/fault diagnosis.
- Ability to verbally communicate with customers and colleagues.
- Ability to use mobile technology such as PDAs to arrange and make appointments with customers.
- Ability to provide the highest standards of quality and customer service.
- Demonstrates an adequate level of fitness to carry out the duties required.
- Willingness to work flexibly (including out of hours rota).
- Awareness, understanding and commitment to the protection and safeguarding of children and young people and/or vulnerable adults.
