We are looking for a Ward Manager to join our friendly nursing team within our Adult Services Directorate in Torbay to provide operational leadership for Salus Ward. You will become part of a supportive multi-disciplinary team, using your skills, experience and leadership to help define and deliver a package of care to people on one of our mixed gender wards that helps them on their road to recovery. The role is dynamic and challenging and we are looking for someone who is highly motivated, innovative and enthusiastic who can demonstrate an eagerness for the on-going development of the service.

Responsibilities

  • Provide operational leadership for Salus Ward and collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team to deliver high-quality care.
  • Lead, motivate and develop the ward team; support induction and supervision of staff.
  • Respond to both physical and mental well-being needs of patients and advocate for patient involvement in care decisions.
  • Demonstrate sound risk assessment and risk management; ensure data security and confidentiality.
  • Manage budgets and resources; understand and meet performance criteria; contribute to service development plans.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and the public; provide non-clinical information and advice as appropriate.
  • Ensure implementation of care plans and safe, compassionate care in a fast-paced inpatient setting.

Qualifications and experience

  • Essential: Post-registration qualification and experience in a health or social care subject (e.g. RMN, Social Work, OT, Psychology).
  • Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD).
  • Essential: at least four years post-registration experience; at least two years in a Band 6 role in an acute inpatient setting; experience of managing other staff; experience of caring for mentally ill people in an acute setting; experience working in a multi-disciplinary team; clinical supervision and mentoring experience.
  • Desirable: recognised management training/qualification or willingness to work toward it; training to Level 3 in safeguarding children, young people and adults; roles and competencies for health care staff.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to lead change and motivate staff.
  • Ability to interact therapeutically with distressed individuals; manage conflict; produce well-written reports; supervise and develop others.
  • Ability to understand and utilise team experience; analyse complex information to drive management action; undertake risk management; develop care plans and service development plans.
  • Project management, strong organisational skills and budget planning; flexible to change and able to promote change in others.
  • Ability to work under pressure, handle workload, and support colleagues; able to manage physically challenging behaviour; trained in physical intervention.

Knowledge and regulatory requirements

  • Leading, supporting and developing teams; knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983 & 2005, Codes of Practice, Mental Capacity Act, Deprivation of Liberties.
  • Clinical supervision; NMC Code of Conduct; Care Programme Approach; current developments in mental health care and nursing practice.
  • Treat patients with dignity and respect; assess, plan, treat and review nursing care needs; recognise and address performance issues; promote high standards in a changing service.
  • Health and Safety and Infection Control.
