Devon Partnership Trust invites applications for a Consultant Psychiatrist at The Cedars, Wonford House, Exeter. The Cedars houses two acute inpatient wards with a capacity of 32 beds for adults of working age. The post holder will manage up to 16 patients, provide assessment, diagnosis, treatment, lead urgent and inpatient care pathways, and participate in on‑call rota and cross‑cover. Approved Clinician status at appointment is preferable; support will be given to obtain authority. The role allows hybrid remote working arrangements where applicable.

Main Responsibilities

  • Provide assessment, diagnosis and treatment for patients managed informally and detained under the Mental Health Act as Responsible Clinician.
  • Lead the wider urgent and inpatient care pathway, ensuring efficient and patient‑centred care flow.
  • Participate in on‑call rota and cross‑cover with other local consultants.
  • Offer 10 hours a week of Supporting Programmed Activities for professional development; attend monthly peer group, quarterly medical advisory committee, and local postgraduate meetings.
  • Provide teaching to undergraduates and postgraduates, supervise junior staff, and contribute to clinical governance and audit.

Qualifications

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council.
  • Approved Clinician status at appointment or eligibility to obtain it within a reasonable time.
  • Eligible for inclusion in the Specialist Register or within 6 months of Complete Clinical Training (CCT) at interview.
  • Approval under section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983.
  • Desirable: MRCPsych, other professional qualifications (e.g., CBT, PSI, CAT), CCT in General Psychiatry.

Experience & Aptitudes

  • Prior experience in a community mental health team or a range of psychiatric settings, especially community.
  • Experience in audit, clinical governance, and service development.
  • Teaching experience with undergraduates/postgraduates, lecturer or supervisor roles.
  • Excellent communication skills, demonstrated leadership, teamwork, and commitment to multidisciplinary working.
  • Commitment to continuing professional development, respect, inclusiveness, and diversity.

Salary and Contract

  • £109,725 to £145,478 a year.
  • Permanent contract.
  • Working pattern: full‑time, part‑time, or flexible.
