Job Summary : We are offering an exciting opportunity for a full time HCPC-registered Psychologist to develop specialist expertise and experience within a Clinical Health Psychology service. This post is suitable for newly qualified psychologists seeking to consolidate their skills, as well as for more experienced clinicians looking to broaden their clinical portfolio. You will join a dynamic, supportive Clinical Health Psychology & Neuropsychology team within the Trust. Initially, the role will be primarily based within the Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) Psychology Service and other departments supported across Royal Devon University Healthcare (RDUH) Foundation Trust, Exeter. Over time, there may be opportunities to work with a range of teams across the wider CHNP service. You will have access to excellent professional support, supervision, and training linked to the role. The post would suit a clinician with an interest in health psychology-based approaches that can incorporate therapies such as CBT, CAT, ACT, CFT, EMDR. Opportunities for further training in these approaches are available. We have collaborative links with the NHS Talking Therapies service that has a long-term conditions team as part of a matched care approach.
Main duties of the job :
Delivering psychological assessments and individual therapies for people with Functional Neurological Disorder, working closely with colleagues in the FND Psychology team and contributing to service development and innovation within the FND pathway. Working alongside senior clinicians to deliver health psychology input to medical teams within the Trust; offering psychological assessments and interventions for people with physical health conditions in outpatient settings. Supporting group-based psychoeducation sessions in collaboration with allied health professionals. Actively contributing to multidisciplinary discussions, valuing close working relationships with healthcare colleagues. Providing teaching and training for multidisciplinary staff as required. Engaging with research and training opportunities through strong links with the University of Exeter Doctorate in Clinical Psychology programme, including potential involvement in service-related research and trainee placements.

Job Purpose : The principal purpose is to improve the psychological health & wellbeing of people within the post holder’s specialist field of practice. The role sits within the Health Psychology and Neuropsychology Department and involves a dynamic role across multiple teams within Clinical Health and Neuropsychology Services, including the Functional Neurological Disorder Service, with strong links to the Integrated Psychological Medicine Pathway in Liaison Psychiatry. The post holder will be clinically managed and supported within the Health Psychology and Neuropsychology Department.
This will be achieved through the following responsibilities:
- Support the systematic provision of a high-quality psychological service in the specialist field of practice, across the identified locality area, as a key component of integrated mental/physical health and wellbeing services across Devon Partnership NHS Trust and the Acute Trust.
- Provide a Clinical Psychology and Therapy service to people as a key component of services provided by Devon Partnership Trust.
- Provide local clinical leadership, co-ordination and supervision for trainees and volunteers employed by or attached to the psychology service, under the direction of the Professional Lead.
- Carry a specialist caseload of clients, and provide advice and consultancy to patients, family members, carers and professionals.
- Work with senior colleagues to develop clinical skills within the service, using the expertise of others to support development of the client group.
- Work autonomously within professional guidelines and governance of psychological practice within the service/local team.
- Receive regular professional and clinical supervision in accordance with Trust policy and Professional Practice Guidelines of the British Psychological Society or appropriate body.
- Observe and abide by all relevant Professional Codes of Conduct and Practice; be fully registered with the Health Professions Council as a condition of employment.
Duties and Responsibilities
Communication and Working Relationship Skills
- Communicate with clients, families and carers in a highly skilled and sensitive manner, including those with difficulties in understanding or communication, who may be hostile or emotionally disturbed.
- Work closely with multidisciplinary colleagues from Devon Partnership Trust and the Acute Trust in a day-to-day, multi-professional integrated service.
- Communicate with health and social care staff in hospital and community settings, providing support and guidance in applying psychological principles and fostering reflective practice.
- Maintain good working relationships with senior managers and professional staff to enable effective service delivery.
Analytical and Judgemental Skills
- Provide specialist clinical/counselling psychology expertise and advice.
- Provide psychological therapies, develop formulations and assessments, and formulate treatment plans for individuals, carers, families and groups; proficiency in individual and group therapy is desirable.
- Support service development and redesign projects within the team.
- Provide complex assessment of specialist conditions.
Planning, Organisational & Supervision Responsibilities
- Plan and organise own work and contribute to development of psychological services within the Trust.
- Provide psychology/therapy supervision to the multi-professional team and oversee trainee placements where appropriate.
- Ensure supervision for clinical staff and ensure placements align with professional guidelines.
Patient Care, Treatment & Therapy
- Provide expert psychological therapies, develop formulations and assessments, and implement interventions for individuals, carers, families and groups; address diversity issues in care.
- Provide consultation and guidance on psychological aspects of patient care to colleagues, other service providers, patients and families.
Policy, R&D & Resources
- Be accountable for own professional actions, following Trust policies and Professional Practice Guidelines.
- Support policies and procedures for psychology services within the Trust and other services; support R&D activities and service evaluations.
- Be responsible for the safe-keeping of equipment and supervise staff; provide placement and supervision for trainees as required.
Information & Research
- Maintain accurate records in line with Trust standards; manage communications and email traffic as required.
- Utilise theory and evidence-based literature to support practice; conduct project work, audits or service evaluations; collect practice/outcome data for service development.
Freedom to Act
- Act autonomously within guidelines; govern psychological practice within locality/specialty; provide expert guidance to colleagues and teams.
Other Tasks
- Ensure clinical care is delivered under appropriate supervision and leadership; keep staff skills up to date.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential: Qualified Clinical or Counselling Psychologist (D.Clin.Psychol. or equivalent) and eligible for Chartered Status; Registered with HCPC.
Desirable: Further training in related areas, and in at least one other psychological therapy; IT Skills.
Knowledge & Skills
Essential: Broad knowledge of specialist services; excellent communication; organisational and time management skills; ability to work independently and as part of a clinical team; ability to handle ambiguity; good presentation/facilitation skills.
Desirable: Leadership qualities, project management skills.
Experience
Essential: Experience or training in diversity awareness; proficiency in both individual and group therapies is desirable.
Desirable: Experience with complex trauma, neuropsychological assessment, teaching/supervision, and experience across care settings.
