We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Chief Officer to join our team and play a vital role in the safe and efficient operation of our vessels. As Chief Officer, you will lead and manage the Deck Crew, ensuring their development and adherence to company standards. Acting as the vessel’s Safety Officer, you will champion best practices, compliance, and a strong safety culture onboard. This role offers the opportunity to make a significant impact by driving operational excellence, fostering teamwork, and upholding the company’s values. You will be expected to lead by example, inspire your crew, and contribute to the continuous improvement of our services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safety and compliance: Acting as the vessel’s Safety Officer, ensuring compliance with maritime regulations, company policies, and industry best practices. Promoting a proactive safety culture, including participation in hazard identification, risk management, and safety behaviour initiatives. Maintaining readiness for external inspections to ensure the vessel meets all flag state, port state control, and trading requirements. Ensuring vessel stability meets IMO minimum stability criteria and overseeing the readiness of lifesaving and firefighting equipment. Upholding the vessel’s security procedures, including fulfilling the role of Ship Security Officer (SSO).
  • Leadership and crew management: Leading and managing the Deck Crew, fostering a professional and collaborative environment. Mentoring and supporting crew members and cadets to encourage skill development and maintain high standards of performance. Coordinating training requirements for the crew to meet operational needs and regulatory standards. Acting as a role model, positively representing the company’s values to all stakeholders, including staff, passengers, and clients.
  • Operations and efficiency: Deputising for the Master when required and undertaking duties assigned by the Master. Overseeing safe and efficient cargo and passenger operations, ensuring compliance with terminal and port authority requirements. Working collaboratively with engineering and other departments to maintain operational efficiency. Monitoring and maintaining the vessel’s deck equipment, structural integrity, and associated systems.
  • Navigation and ship handling: Performing navigational watchkeeping duties and demonstrating exceptional ship-handling skills. Ensuring the vessel operates safely and efficiently during voyages and port operations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Chief Mate’s Certificate of Competency (CoC) – Minimum 3000GT, near-coastal.
  • Valid ENG1 Medical certificate.
  • Up-to-date STCW mandatory training, including refresher courses as required.
  • Proficiency in Medical Care on Board, with valid refresher training.

Desirable Qualifications and Skills

  • Crisis Management training (can be provided).
  • Ship Security Officer certification (can be provided).
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Good IT proficiency to support onboard systems and reporting.
