Job overview

We are recruiting for a Bank Portering Staff who wishes to join #TeamIOWNHS. You should share our passion and drive to ensure that our patients receive quality and compassionate care and work with us to ensure the Trust continues its journey towards “great people, great place”.

To provide Bank Portering services to the Hospital Wards and Departments

Main duties of the job

  • Collection of specimens from wards/departments to a determined time, plus return of same if specimen not labelled correctly etc. as requested.
  • Delivery of liquid nitrogen to wards and departments as requested.
  • Checking, signing out and collection of units of blood and blood products from
  • Blood Bank to wards using the personalised computerised bar code system.
  • Using blood cool boxes as required, returning unused units to the blood fridge and recorded as requested if within designated time frames for blood to be out of fridge. Ensure matches are made with Patient name /Isle of Wight number and ensure that a signature is received from a senior member on nursing staff on receipt of blood at ward

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To transfer patients on hospital site as per instruction by, stretcher or be with the aid of motorised bed pushers. Also with the aid of roller board and patient slides etc.
  • To transfer patients safely on hospital site using wheelchairs including pushing up and down the 1 in 20 slope
  • To transfer patients by internal Ambulance, by wheelchair or falcon stretcher as requested. Ensuring that the wheelchairs or stretcher are correctly secured to the vehicle before transportation
  • Check and replenish items used in patient movement vehicle as required.
  • Give reassurance to elderly confused patients when carrying out transfers
  • Movement of bodies from wards to the Mortuary including deceased babies from Maternity as requested and cleaning of equipment used.
  • When the mortuary is closed to receive BID (Brought in Dead) from Police and Ambulance. Check identity against relevant paper work, log valuables, and place body in refrigerator following agreed procedure.
  • To assist in the evacuation of wards due to fire etc

Notes and Equipment

  • Collection and delivery of patient’s notes and X-rays, including large bags of clinic case notes.
  • Collection of any medical devices from ward to ward, e.g. monitors, syringe drivers, infusion pumps, air mattresses etc.
  • Collection and delivery of any fault or broken equipment from wards/departments to Estates maintenance department and delivery of repaired items back to destination.
  • Inspecting Portering equipment trolleys, wheel chairs etc reporting faults to
  • Supervisor to ensure the safe transfer of patients
  • Out of hour’s collection of sterile equipment boxes to and from
  • wards/departments.
  • Safe collection of deceased patients property to bereavement office and movement of patient property and valuables on patient moves.

Pharmacy Duties

  • Routine collection of Pharmacy boxes from wards/departments to Pharmac
  • Delivery of medication from ward to ward as requested, obtaining signature of

Waste and Linen

  • Collection of general waste bags on site and deliver to central collection point and dispose of using hydraulic compactor.
  • Collection of dirty linen bags on site and deliver to central collection points.
  • Delivery of clean linen to wards/departments out of normal working hours.
  • To check and change Medical Gas Cylinders on Wards and Departments replacing washers as necessary, checking and change flow metres as required
  • To change Medical Gas Manifolds as requested.

Emergency Situations

  • Attend any fire calls, stand at designated positions to stop entry of visitors/patients/staff etc. for safety reasons.
  • Attend panic alarms as required and advise control office as to findings.
  • Attend emergency situations as requested by Senior Porter / Supervisor.
  • On notification of major incident, to be able to respond as directed by Porter

Vehicle Check and Clean

  • Keep vehicles clean and tidy.
  • Visual checks for damage every day and report to Senior Porter on duty.
  • Fill in vehicle log books on each journey and check pressure levels and fluid
  • Re-fuel vehicles at off site garage as necessary.

The rota porters also have a basic knowledge of all departmental tasks for

The rota porter is expected to undertake requests for the departments when the dedicated porters are busy, or out of normal working hours when the dedicated Porter is off duty.
