Overview
7.5 hours per week. This role is based at the Museum of Island History and requires availability on Thursdays to support public opening hours. The Isle of Wight Heritage Service is seeking a Documentation Assistant to join our team, caring for the human history museum collections.
Responsibilities
- Support the documentation and care of museum collections, ensuring records are accurate and accessible.
- Undertake tasks such as accessioning, cataloguing, object labelling, and packing.
- Assist with collections research to enhance public understanding and interpretation.
- Respond to enquiries from the public and colleagues.
- Contribute to the effective operation of our museums: Cowes Maritime Museum, the Museum of Island History, and Newport Roman Villa.
- Support the Museum Curator in maintaining the museums’ Accredited status.
- Provide occasional front-of-house cover and undertake keyholder responsibilities.
Qualifications and experience
- Experience working in museums and with collections.
- A keen interest in history, particularly that of the Isle of Wight.
- A proven understanding of professional museum standards and practices.
- The ability to work flexibly, independently, and collaboratively within a small, busy team that includes volunteers.
