About the role

Are you an experienced Ophthalmologist looking for an opportunity to develop your specialist interests, shape services and make a lasting impact to an Island community? Join our team at Noble’s Hospital as a Consultant Ophthalmologist, where you’ll play a key role in developing and delivering our Island-wide ophthalmology service. We’re looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Consultant with an interest in medical retina and experience in high-volume cataract surgery.

You’ll provide consultant-level medical retina care, including the management of age-related macular degeneration, retinal vascular disease, diabetic retinopathy and uveitis, alongside general ophthalmology and regular cataract surgery. This role offers the opportunity to help shape the future of ophthalmology services on the Isle of Man while developing an ophthalmic subspecialty interest that meets the needs of the local population and supports ongoing clinical competence.

Working within a consultant-led service, you will make autonomous decisions, work closely with multidisciplinary colleagues and contribute to delivering high-quality patient care across the Island.

What can this role offer you?

Working in an Island health service provides a varied and rewarding consultant role with scope to influence service development. You'll work across a broad range of general and specialist ophthalmology, making autonomous decisions about which patients can be safely cared for on-Island and when tertiary input is required.

As part of the role, you will:

  • Provide consultant-level medical retina care
  • Undertake two high-volume cataract surgery lists each week
  • Participate in outpatient care across general ophthalmology, glaucoma, medical retina and cataracts
  • Contribute to the supervision, teaching and training of specialty doctors and other clinical staff
  • Support training and development with community optometrists
  • Participate in clinical governance, audit and quality improvement
  • Contribute to a 1 in 4 on-call rota operating between 8am to 8pm
  • Help shape and develop the ophthalmology service to meet the future needs of the Island’s population.

The post is a full-time 10 PA position, with an indicative allocation of 8.5 Direct Clinical Care PAs and 1.5 Supporting Professional Activity PAs. Up to a further 1 SPA may be agreed through the job-planning process for appropriate additional activity.

A workplace that invests in you:

  • A competitive salary that increases each 12 months until you reach the salary maximum.
  • Annual leave starting from 32 days and 10 Bank Holidays.
  • Subject to meeting eligibility criteria, the IOM Public Service offers two pension arrangements: the Isle of Man Government Unified Scheme 2011 or the Isle of Man Government Defined Contribution (DC) Arrangement.
  • You may be eligible for a Blue Light Card, unlocking a wide range of exclusive discounts on shopping, food and leisure activities at hundreds of popular high street and online retailers.
  • Our on-site education and training centre, Keyll Darree, comprises a lecture theatre, well stocked medical library, training facilities and a state-of-the-art simulation lab which is operated by trained simulation practitioners.
  • We recognise the need for all medical staff on the Island to maintain connections with medicine in the United Kingdom and encourage links with other units, as well as providing study leave with pay and expenses to attend approved conferences and workshops.
  • Ability to apply for an unpaid career break after 3 years’ service.
  • Access to the Isle of Man Public Service Cycle to Work scheme after your first year of employment.
  • Free on-site car parking.
  • Step away from NHS pressures and demands!
  • The Island’s healthcare system is similar but separate to the UK NHS.
  • Access to the Learning, Education and Development training facility, which is exclusively for Public Service employees, to keep on top of your continuous professional development.
  • Access to the staff canteen at Noble’s Hospital where you can purchase affordable food and drinks in your breaks.
  • Free access to the Isle of Man Government Staff Welfare Service which offers professional counselling, emotional support and signposting on a wide range of issues.
  • Accommodation may be available for the first 6 months in your role at a reduced rate for non-Island residents, subject to availability.
  • A relocation package of up to £7,000 based on receipts is available for this role.

Things to note:

  • An enhanced with barring police check is required for this post, the cost of which will be covered by the Isle of Man Government.
  • Interviews are expected to take place during the week commencing 14 December 2026.
