Our work is varied and impactful, covering some of the UK's most exciting and nationally significant infrastructure programmes such as National Grid's Great Grid Upgrade, Heathrow Expansion, East-West Rail, and Sizewell C. We also support a broad mix of built-environment and development schemes. Our clients operate across sectors including highways, rail, aviation, defence, nuclear, residential and property, energy generation and renewables, and transmission and distribution. We provide support throughout the full project lifecycle, from early business case development and securing consents and permits (including DCOs), through to design and construction.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to lead your own smaller projects while working alongside Senior Project Managers on major programmes giving you exposure, development, and room to grow. There will also be opportunities to line manage and mentor junior colleagues and to contribute to the ongoing development of our Environmental Project Management Team's strategy.
- Support the development of project proposals including determining project requirements, scope, resources, programme, and cost estimates (budgets) for project delivery.
- Develop and maintain project management documentation including project management plans, cost estimates and forecasts, risk registers, project schedules, stakeholder registers, project organisation charts etc. to successfully deliver project objectives on smaller scale projects and assisting a Senior Project Manager on larger projects.
- Monitor and control the project schedule, staff hours, budgets, forecasts, and expenditure as well as project progress.
- Ensure that health and safety information for site visits, including securing internal approvals, are in place.
- Undertake contract management and contract administration.
- Actively manage project change and risks, ensuring that project governance is adhered to and projects are delivered compliant and optimised.
- Work with, lead, mentor and develop multi-disciplinary environmental project teams, consisting of technical/professional staff and suppliers.
- Promote and hold the project team accountable for delivery of environmental betterment, and future ready and net zero strategies.
- Present as the face of Environment and Consents when interfacing with other WSP teams and presenting as the face of WSP when interfacing with clients and stakeholders.
Your team... We are a strong, dedicated, and successful environmentally focused Project Management team, and we are continuing to grow to support WSP's robust pipeline of secured projects. We are proud of the friendly, supportive, and collaborative culture we've built-one that enables our team members to develop, feel empowered, and thrive.
As a recognised centre of excellence within our Environment & Consents discipline, we provide leadership and tailored project management support across a wide variety of programmes. Our work spans PMO and Project Controls through to Project Manager and Project Director roles, and we are involved at every stage of the project lifecycle.
What we will be looking for you to demonstrate...
- Proven experience as an Assistant Project Manager or Project Manager within a project or PMO setting, with a preference for a background in environment or sustainability sectors.
- A genuine interest in the environment and land-based sustainable development, paired with a positive, can-do attitude and a real enthusiasm to grow your career.
- You will be a confident communicator, both in writing and in person, able to convey key messages clearly and keep project teams and stakeholders informed and aligned.
- Working knowledge of programme management, including work breakdown structure, dependencies and critical path, and ability to assess MS Project/Primavera P6 or similar outputs.
- You will bring strong commercial and contractual awareness, with the ability to demonstrate financial acumen and analytical thinking. You will have a proven track record of delivering projects within budget and managing effective change control.
- Experience working with Professional Services Contracts, including NEC3/4, would be an advantage.
- Membership of an appropriate professional institution (e.g. PMI, APM, MIEnvSc, MIEMA, MRICS) and either chartered or working towards chartership / other accreditations.
