We are seeking to recruit a motivated Healthcare Assistant to join our friendly practice nurse team. The right person will provide clinical & administrative support by offering a high quality service to the patients of the practice, within their professional competence, under the guidance of a qualified nurse. We have some flexibility in the hours required and will be recruiting up to a maximum of 9 hours per week. We reserve the right to close the application period early should sufficient applications be received.
Main duties of the job:
You will be expected to provide a range of Healthcare Assistant duties within your scope of practice, under the guidance of the nurse team.
About us:
Our clinical team consists of two GP Partners, three salaried GPs, two Practice Nurses and one HCA, as well as the extended team of Pharmacists, Social Prescribers and First Contact Practitioners. They are supported by a committed team of care navigators, administrative support and managerial team. We are also a training practice with GP Registrars and Students on placement with us. As a smaller team we have to work collaboratively to ensure we are achieving the high standards that we attain to and are providing care to our patients to be proud of.
Job responsibilities:
- Support the practice nursing and administrative teams in the delivery of clinical and administrative services, working as part of the practice multi-disciplinary team, delivering care within their scope of practice to the entitled patient population.
- The Healthcare Assistant will deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion and patient education while also supporting the administrative team on an as-required basis.
- Core responsibilities include:
- Undertake new patient health checks and NHS Health Checks
- Support the Practice Nurse with health promotion programmes
- Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximetry, blood pressure, temperature and pulse rate, recording findings accurately
- Facilitate routine and 24-hour BP monitoring, advising patients accordingly
- Undertake wound care, dressings and other clinical tasks as required
- Support the Practice Nurse with the management of chronic disease clinics
- Carry out BMI checks as directed
- Undertake venepuncture
- Administer seasonal vaccinations, Vitamin B12, Depo-Provera and Prostate injections under the guidance of up-to-date PSDs and PGDs while safely following Practice Policy for the administration of injections
- Carry out ear irrigation under the supervision of the Practice Nurse
- Carry out ECGs as requested
- Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation
- Provide support during minor operations as required
- Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session
- Ensure fridges are cleaned routinely in accordance with extant guidance
- Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisations IPC policy
- Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate
In addition to the primary responsibilities, the Healthcare Assistant may be requested to:
- Participate in practice audit as directed by the audit lead
- Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care
- Support and participate in shared learning within the organisation
- Complete opening and closing procedures in accordance with the duty rota
Person Specification:
- GCSE grade A to C in English and Maths
- Completion of the HCA Care Certificate
- Qualified to NVQ level 2 in Health and Social Care
- Qualified in Phlebotomy
- Experience of working with the general public
- Experience of working in a healthcare setting
- Excellent communication skills (written and oral)
- Clear, polite telephone manner
- Qualified to NVQ level 3
- Experience of working in Primary Care
- Experience of using SystmOne
