About the department and role:
The department occupies an impressive, purpose-built facility which was opened in 2012 and is still a flagship building of the school. It comprises two large multi-material workshops, a machine area, prep room, full ICT suite and electronics lab. There are currently three full-time members of teaching staff in the department and one technician.
Design and Technology: Product Design are options at GCSE and A level within the school. At both levels, pupils currently specialise in woods, metals and polymers to realise their designs. The subject is compulsory in years 7 and 8. It is optional in year 9, however, it is typically chosen by the majority of the year group. The Department is actively involved in the Year 9 STEM Curriculum lessons under the FutureTech umbrella and actively supports a variety of extra-curricular initiatives within the School and with outside agencies. These include STEM clubs, providing students with engineering and problem-solving challenges.
