Your Role and What You’ll Be Doing

You’ll join Irwin Mitchell’s Restructuring & Insolvency team, based in Birmingham, working closely with Partner Katie Molloy as part of one of the largest national restructuring and insolvency teams among UK full‑service firms. The team advises a wide range of clients, including insolvency practitioners, directors, lenders and corporates, on both contentious and non‑contentious matters arising from financial distress.

Irwin Mitchell’s Restructuring & Insolvency practice is known for delivering commercially focused, pragmatic advice across the full spectrum of insolvency scenarios, from early‑stage turnaround and restructuring advice through to formal insolvency appointments and complex litigation. Working as part of a collaborative national team, you’ll be involved in a varied and high‑quality workload, including:

  • Advising insolvency practitioners, companies and directors on corporate insolvency matters, including administrations, liquidations, CVAs and restructuring.
  • Supporting senior lawyers and partners in relation to insolvency litigation and office-holder claims (such as wrongful trading, misfeasance, breach of duty, and transaction avoidance claims such as preferences and transactions at an undervalue).
  • Director and shareholder disputes arising from distressed situations.
  • Cross border insolvency and related disputes.
  • Advising on restructuring solutions and risk mitigation strategies for distressed businesses.
  • Assisting with transactional and corporate support elements of insolvency matters, including sales out of administration.
  • Managing your own caseload with appropriate supervision.
  • Drafting clear, commercially focused advice and client‑ready documentation.
  • Contributing to business development activity and the continued growth of the Birmingham and national insolvency practice.

About You

We’re looking for a motivated and collaborative solicitor who is keen to develop their career within a leading Restructuring & Insolvency practice. You’ll combine strong technical ability with a practical, commercial mindset and a genuine interest in insolvency and restructuring work.

  • Qualified solicitor with a minimum of 1 year PQE.
  • Experience in restructuring and insolvency matters gained either post‑qualification or during training.
  • A clear interest in both contentious and non‑contentious insolvency work.
  • Confidence working with clients and delivering clear, pragmatic advice.
  • Strong drafting skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively with appropriate supervision.
  • A collaborative, team‑oriented approach and willingness to support colleagues across the wider national team.
