We are currently recruiting for a Mechanical Design Engineer on behalf of a growing engineering and manufacturing business within the Limavady area. This is an excellent opportunity to join a progressive design team working on bespoke low-voltage switchgear and engineered solutions within a fast-paced manufacturing environment. The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering accurate, manufacturable mechanical designs while working closely with engineering, manufacturing, projects, and purchasing teams.

The Role

Reporting to the Head of Design, you will be responsible for producing high-quality 3D models, manufacturing drawings, BOMs, and release information for live engineering projects. You will work closely with multiple departments to ensure designs are practical, accurate, and fully aligned with manufacturing and project requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and update 3D models using Autodesk Inventor
  • Design mechanical arrangements for low-voltage switchgear assemblies
  • Produce manufacturing drawings, BOMs, and supporting release documentation
  • Design sheet metal components including frames, plinths, covers, gland plates, support brackets, and enclosures
  • Support copperwork layouts, cable access arrangements, ventilation systems, and internal panel configurations
  • Ensure designs are practical, repeatable, and suitable for manufacture and assembly
  • Work to project deadlines while communicating progress and technical issues effectively

Design Accuracy & Manufacturing Support

  • Ensure drawings, models, BOMs, and release packs are accurate and aligned
  • Review designs against specifications, GA drawings, and internal standards
  • Support internal design reviews prior to manufacturing release
  • Update designs based on client changes, manufacturing feedback, and review comments
  • Assist manufacturing teams with design-related queries, fit-up issues, and technical support during production
  • Communicate design changes clearly across departments

Continuous Improvement

  • Support standardisation of components, assemblies, and design methods
  • Contribute ideas to improve manufacturability, assembly efficiency, and product quality
  • Assist with development of templates, libraries, checklists, and design guides
  • Support prototype and product development activities where required

The Person

We are keen to speak with candidates who have:

  • Experience in mechanical design within an engineering or manufacturing environment
  • Strong 3D CAD experience, ideally Autodesk Inventor
  • Ability to create and interpret manufacturing drawings
  • Knowledge of sheet metal fabrication, folding, punching, and assembly methods
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities
  • Good communication skills and a team-focused attitude

Desirable Experience

  • Autodesk Vault or similar PDM systems
  • Low-voltage switchgear, electrical enclosures, control panels, or machinery design
  • Experience with copperwork, busbar systems, and panel construction
  • Producing BOMs, DXFs, and manufacturing release packs
  • Design for manufacture and assembly principles
