The Role of Quality Manager
Reporting to the Operations Director, you will take responsibility for the development and continuous improvement of quality across the manufacturing operation, while leading a team across Quality Engineering, Quality Co-ordination and Quality Technicians (currently a smaller quality team of 6-7 but this is expected to grow over the coming 2 years). The role has a broad remit covering the QMS, supplier quality, incoming materials, manufacturing quality, machine testing, outbound quality and customer feedback, with a strong focus on developing a proactive quality culture focused on prevention rather than detection.
Key Responsibilities for this Quality Manager position
- Take ownership of the Quality Management System, maintaining ISO 9001 compliance and driving its continued development and improvement.
- Lead, support and develop the Quality team, creating greater quality ownership throughout the manufacturing operation.
- Manage quality across the full manufacturing process, from supplier and goods-in quality through production, testing and final product quality.
- Develop and improve quality procedures, control plans, inspection standards and work instructions.
- Establish and monitor quality KPIs, using data to identify trends and drive improvement.
- Manage supplier quality performance, corrective actions and supplier improvement activities.
- Lead root cause investigations and corrective actions using structured problem-solving techniques including 8D, A3, Fishbone, PFMEA and SPC.
- Work closely with Operations, Engineering and Procurement to reduce defects, improve process capability and reduce the Cost of Poor Quality.
- Drive Continuous Improvement and Kaizen activities across the operation.
- Ensure customer, warranty and field quality issues are effectively investigated and translated into sustainable product and process improvements.
Essential Criteria for this Quality Manager position
- Experience within a senior Quality Engineering or Quality Management role in a metal manufacturing or engineering environment.
- Experience leading, supervising or providing direction to other quality personnel.
- Hands-on experience managing, maintaining and improving a Quality Management System (QMS).
- Strong working knowledge of ISO 9001.
- Experience of root cause analysis, corrective actions and Continuous Improvement.
- A good understanding of manufacturing processes and the ability to work effectively across Production, Engineering and Supply Chain.
- Experience within heavy engineering, machinery manufacturing, automotive, aerospace or another complex manufacturing environment would be particularly relevant, although candidates from other strong manufacturing backgrounds will also be considered.
If you are an experienced Quality Manager, Lead Quality Engineer or Senior Quality Engineer with experience managing a QMS and leading or supporting other quality personnel, this could represent an excellent next step in your career. To apply for this Quality Manager position, please submit your CV or contact Hugh Nugent at Vickerstock for a confidential discussion. All approaches will be dealt with in the strictest confidence.
