We have a unique opportunity for a Senior Engineer to join our Belfast Streets Team, supporting the delivery of major active travel and sustainable transport projects across the island of Ireland. In this senior technical role, you will support the delivery of key programmes and schemes including:
- The Belfast Streets Teams portfolio of active travel and urban infrastructure schemes
- The Active Travel Support Office (ATSO), providing technical input where required
- The Coleraine to Portstewart Signature Active Travel Scheme, one of Northern Ireland's most high-profile active travel corridors
- Active travel and streets projects across the Republic of Ireland, working with colleagues in Dublin and Cork
- Capacity support to our Belfast Highways Team, contributing active travel and streets expertise to a wider range of highways and greenway projects
You will act as a technical lead, supervising graduate engineers, coordinating multidisciplinary inputs, and ensuring our designs meet best practice standards and deliver high-quality outcomes for clients and communities.
Your Role & Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Delivery
- Lead the design, review and delivery of active travel, streetscape and cycling schemes.
- Ensure all work meets relevant design standards (including NI Active Travel Design Guide, Cycling by Design, Cycle Design Manual, DMRB, TII Standards, SRW and MCHW).
- Apply best practice and innovation to improve accessibility, safety and sustainable transport outcomes.
- Provide technical assurance and support across schemes in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
Coordination & Collaboration
- Work closely with clients, local authorities, delivery partners and contractors to progress schemes and resolve technical challenges.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary inputs covering highways, drainage, structures, environmental, planning and urban design.
- Represent the Belfast Streets team at meetings, workshops and design reviews.
Team Support & Mentoring
- Mentor and supervise graduate engineers, supporting their development and ensuring high-quality outputs.
- Contribute to the continued growth of the Belfast Streets team by sharing knowledge, supporting bids and helping shape best practice.

Qualifications
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) with ICE, EI, CIHT, or equivalent, or able to demonstrate substantial progress toward achieving chartered status.
- Post-graduate experience specifically in the design, supervision and management of active travel, streetscape or highway schemes.
- Strong technical knowledge of active travel design standards and statutory processes.
- Experience working with clients, local authorities and multidisciplinary teams.
