Job Description
The Shift Engineer will provide essential engineering expertise to support Operations in reducing and eliminating downtime. This role involves both proactive and reactive maintenance.
Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 8 am – 4 pm.
Salary: Up to £45,000 per annum (DOE).
Key Duties of a Multi‑Skilled Engineer:
- Conduct routine inspections and preventative maintenance on production equipment.
- Identify and resolve potential issues before they cause failures.
- Respond rapidly to machinery breakdowns, diagnose problems and perform repairs or report to the engineering team leader if external specialists are required.
- Carry out machine adjustments, size changes and machine settings when modifications are made to support production.
- Monitor and calibrate equipment to ensure accuracy, quality and safety standards are met.
- Keep accurate records of maintenance (e.g. PPM schedules, shift reporting).
- Adhere to health & safety guidelines and ensure compliance with company policies and procedures.
- Occasionally get involved with project work to get equipment back up to standard and improve production performance figures.
Qualifications:
- Strong knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems – preferably with an electrical bias.
- Experience working within a food or manufacturing environment is desirable but not essential.
- Experience in food packaging is an advantage but not essential.
- Understanding of food safety and hygiene is preferred.
- Good knowledge of health & safety practices.
- Proficient in troubleshooting and repairing industrial machinery including baggers, multi‑heads, conveyors and packaging equipment.
- Proactive approach to maintenance and a commitment to ensuring the highest levels of equipment reliability.
- Ability to train and develop colleagues when required.
- Good communication skills and the ability to make decisions on the spot.
- Ability to work under pressure in a fast‑paced environment.
- Experience maintaining packing equipment (pneumatics, horizontal flow packers, vertical form‑fill baggers, carton erectors, multi‑heads, gluing systems, metal detectors and weighers, X‑ray, bespoke hand‑packing/labelling lines with printers).
