The Structural / Civil Engineering Technical Director leads, develops, and manages the Structural and Civil Engineering discipline across the region. This discipline includes Structural Engineers, Civil Engineers, Structural Designers, Civil Designers, and associated technical specialists. The Director ensures excellence in engineering quality, technical delivery, innovation, and alignment with global standards.
The Structural / Civil Engineering Technical Director shall:
- Be responsible and accountable for the Structural & Civil Engineering discipline.
- Ensure consistent, high quality engineering deliverables through structured QA/QC reviews and technical audits.
- Support business development with technical expertise, proposal input, and engineering work hour estimates.
- Maintain strong technical proficiency across structural and civil engineering to understand project requirements and allocate appropriate resources.
- Support strategic company initiatives and innovation, ensuring discipline alignment with organisational goals.
- Act as a subject matter expert (SME) for key structural and civil engineering areas.
- Manage discipline budgets, inter office collaboration, and quality assurance.
- Ensure alignment with global engineering procedures, standards, and software platforms.
- Coordinate with Regional Senior Directors, Project Managers, and Proposal Managers to determine scope, cost, complexity, planning, and scheduling requirements for structural and civil engineering projects.
- Assign appropriate engineering personnel to ensure cost effective, high quality technical support.
- Define efficient engineering workflows and levels of design detail to achieve project objectives.
- Estimate engineering hours required for project deliverables and support project planning.
- Ensure the quality, accuracy, consistency, timeliness, and completeness of all structural and civil engineering work in accordance with engineering principles, codes, standards, and project schedules.
- Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance to discipline personnel.
Strategic & Organisational Leadership
- Develop a Structural & Civil Engineering strategic business plan aligned with company wide long term goals.
- Contribute to ongoing strategic planning for the regional organisation.
- Lead the Structural & Civil Engineering Communities of Practice (CoPs) to promote continuous development of engineering frameworks, standards, and best practices.
- Assist in developing and coordinating divisional and inter departmental policies, procedures, and standards.
- Collaborate with global engineering directors to ensure consistent project execution across all regions.
- Drive innovation in structural and civil engineering, including digital engineering, automation, and AI enabled workflows to improve productivity and reduce manual tasks.
- Maintain active engagement with relevant industry bodies and encourage team participation for professional development.
People Leadership & Capability Development
- Perform hiring, performance appraisals, salary recommendations, and employee development planning.
- Plan and schedule work to ensure effective distribution of assignments, resources, and facilities.
- Oversee inter office labour sharing and outsourcing to external consultants.
- Conduct regular capability assessments to identify skill gaps and implement training or recruitment strategies.
- Build and maintain a culture of collaboration, inclusivity, and high performance.
- Lead teams through organisational change and ensure smooth transitions during restructuring or strategic shifts.
Technical Excellence & Engineering Delivery
- Ensure quality of all structural and civil engineering deliverables, including calculations, models, drawings, specifications, and reports.
- Oversee integration of structural and civil engineering models with multidisciplinary BIM environments.
- Support digital engineering deliverables such as model coordination, clash detection, structural analysis integration, and 4D/5D engineering workflows.
- Collaborate with project teams to align engineering levels of detail (LOD) across project phases.
- Oversee development of engineering standards, templates, and technical guidelines.
- Review and approve engineering execution plans for all projects.
- Support risk assessments including structural safety reviews, constructability assessments, geotechnical risk evaluations, and civil infrastructure risk analyses.
- Provide engineering consultancy services as required.
Business Development & Client Engagement
- Participate in business development by identifying new opportunities with existing and prospective clients.
- Contribute to technical proposals, sales presentations, and client meetings.
- Collaborate with client engineering counterparts to develop concepts and technical strategies for projects.
Other Responsibilities
- Travel to regional offices and client sites to support projects and business objectives.
- Lead special projects as assigned.
- Support a smooth transition to new organisational structures, addressing concerns and fostering alignment.
- Promote the company’s vision, values, and culture across the engineering discipline.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Extensive experience in the structural and civil engineering design of complex industrial, mission critical, pharmaceutical, or large scale commercial facilities.
- Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary engineering teams and manage large technical projects.
- Strong administrative and organisational skills with the ability to plan, coordinate, and supervise engineering work.
- Expertise in structural and civil engineering software, BIM platforms, and digital engineering workflows.
- Experience preparing and reviewing engineering deliverables including calculations, models, drawings, specifications, and digital coordination outputs.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with senior stakeholders.
- Proven ability to lead teams through change and maintain a positive, high performance culture.
- Strong background in employee engagement, talent development, and succession planning.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic, growth oriented environment.
- A degree or equivalent qualification in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
- Commitment to fostering a culture of innovation, inclusivity, and continuous improvement.
