You will be learning to maintain, diagnose and repair HGV vehicles under the guidance of qualified staff. This will be a combination of on-the-job training and classroom study.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Using diagnostic equipment
  • Performing routine services and inspections
  • Repairing components
  • Ensuring safety compliance

Wage: £17,680 to £28,089.10, depending on your age.

Training course: Heavy vehicle service and maintenance technician (level 3)

Hours: Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm. Saturday optional overtime. 42 hours 30 minutes a week.

Start Date: Monday 3 August 2026

Duration: 3 years

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you will do at work:

  • Learn how to use diagnostic equipment
  • Learn how to carry out routine vehicle inspections
  • Cleaning & tidying the workshop
  • Organise parts to be returned
  • Assist technicians in their day-to-day work

Training includes time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.

Training course details:

  • Carry out the basic tasks with tools and equipment common to all procedures involving basic mechanical and electrical procedures related to HV
  • Keep updated with emerging new technologies within the HV industry
  • Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop and adhere to company and legislative processes
  • Access specific and related HV technical information appropriately
  • Service, inspect and maintain HVs and trailers to meet company, Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and manufacturers’ standards
  • Use a range of diagnostic and electrical measuring equipment to identify faults and underlying causes on HVs
  • Inspect and prepare vehicles and trailers in accordance with DVSA standards prescribed in the tester’s manual
  • Carry out final quality checks before handover to the customer without supervision
  • Apply advanced diagnostic principles and logical/problem-solving techniques and regimes
  • Maintain records to company and operators’ licence obligations and regulation
  • Communicate effectively in both oral and written mediums internally and with customers on a range of topics to support HV inspection and diagnosing techniques

The training will be completed in Rochester, Kent.

Requirements: Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

After this apprenticeship, there is an opportunity during the apprenticeship to complete your HGV licence. Following completion of the apprenticeship, a position within the company may be offered which would involve a company vehicle and the opportunity to complete breakdowns and recovery.
