Training course: Mechatronics maintenance technician (level 3)
Hours: Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:00pm. 40 hours a week
Start date: Tuesday 1 September 2026
Duration: 3 years 6 months
Work: Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you’ll do at work:
- You’ll work with expert training providers and gain real, hands-on experience alongside experienced engineers, helping you build practical skills and confidence from day one.
- Year 1: Learning the Foundations. In your first year, most of your time will be spent at IPS International in Rochester, Kent, where you’ll live and train on a residential basis.
- From Year 2 onwards, your apprenticeship becomes even more varied. You’ll split your time between on-site learning and residential training, spending up to nine weeks a year away from home at national training centres or visiting equipment and robotics suppliers.
- You’ll be based at our Ewhurst factory, but for 9 weeks a year you will be spending time at our brand-new Centre of Excellence at our Sandtoft site in Doncaster, a purpose-built training space with modern workshops, classrooms, conference facilities and welfare areas.
- You’ll train on a wide range of mechanical, electrical and robotic equipment, learning how to install, operate and maintain cutting-edge technology to the highest standards.
- This role isn’t just about learning the job, it’s about building a long-term career. You’ll take part in real projects, develop valuable workplace skills and be supported every step of the way as you grow into a qualified engineer.
- A typical day could involve shadowing experienced engineers, helping to maintain and repair machinery, responding to breakdowns, or taking part in improvement projects.
- You’ll work across different UK manufacturing sites, giving you a broad understanding of the equipment you’ll be responsible for and how large-scale production environments operate.
Training: Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.

Responsibilities:
- Use information technology to create documentation, communication and information management.
- Obtain, read and interpret task related documentation, such as work instructions, quality control documents, drawings, operation manuals, specifications and service manuals.
- Record information such as job sheets, risk assessments, equipment service records, test results, handover documents and manufacturers' documentation.
- Conduct initial assessment of equipment that requires maintenance.
- Formulate plans setting out the methodology of the maintenance activity including timescales and resources.
- Select, prepare and use material, consumables, tools and equipment.
- Comply with health and safety regulations and organisational requirements applicable in the workplace.
- Apply dynamic risk assessment, hazard identification and risk mitigation principles and techniques.
- Manufacture, repair and refurbish components using hand and machine tools.
- Restore the workplace on completion of the maintenance activity.
- Apply techniques and processes used in reactive maintenance and repair activities on complex engineered systems.
- Produce, maintain, update, record and store documentation including electronic items such as PLC and robot programmes.
- Apply functional testing and checking techniques and processes after maintenance interventions.
- Record findings and take necessary actions.
- Communicate in writing and prepare communications, documents and reports on technical matters.
- Identify opportunities and make recommendations to improve operational performance.
- Follow equity, diversity and inclusion procedures.
- Carry out and record planned and unplanned learning and development activities.
- Apply fault-finding techniques used in reactive maintenance on complex integrated systems.
Requirements:
- GCSE in English, Maths and Science (grade 4 and above).
- Accommodations near the training facility will be provided and candidates must be aged 18 or over by August 2026.
- Enrolment onto your apprenticeship programme is subject to prior attainment checks.
