A fantastic opportunity has opened within our Point of Care Testing (POCT) team for a motivated Band 4 Associate Practitioner. The department focuses on innovation, including the rollout of a single solution data management system and establishing Community Diagnostic Centres in Southend and Basildon. Our POCT team is at the heart of patient care across Southend and Basildon University Hospitals and surrounding community sites. We provide a fast, high‑quality, responsive service that keeps clinical teams equipped and confident in using essential POCT technology—including blood gas analysers, blood glucose meters, urinalysis devices, pregnancy testing platforms, and more. We operate within Pathology First, a joint venture between Southend University Hospital, Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals and Synlab, delivering services across all disciplines including Blood Transfusion, Biochemistry, Haematology, Immunology, Microbiology, Histopathology, Cytopathology and Phlebotomy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Validate and verify new devices, supporting future developments and major projects.
  • Assist the POCT Manager in overseeing POCT equipment and its users.
  • Train Trust staff on correct use of POCT instruments.
  • Perform a range of protocol‑driven tasks, including specialist or complex procedures.
  • Support routine secondary care procedures across primary and secondary care settings.
  • Work across Basildon and Southend hospital sites and community locations, covering shifts between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., including weekend daytime work.

Key Relationships

  • Other healthcare professionals and POCT staff.
  • Appropriate line managers and clinical scientists within the Blood Sciences Department.
