Server Engineer

Role Summary:

We are seeking a skilled Server Engineer (2nd Line Engineer) to manage and enhance the server infrastructure for our client base. The role involves ensuring peak server performance, robust security, and system resilience. You will provide expert support, lead disaster recovery planning, and drive automation efforts to improve efficiency. Reporting to the 2nd Line Team Leader, this role offers a balance of proactive maintenance and service provisioning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain documentation, system configurations, and troubleshooting guides.
  • Manage, monitor, and optimise servers for over 250 clients.
  • Implement patch management strategies to ensure secure and up-to-date systems.
  • Manage backup, recovery, and disaster recovery solutions to ensure business continuity.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex server issues, serving as the escalation point for critical incidents.
  • Collaborate across teams to identify performance enhancements and ensure high availability.
  • Provide expert advice on server architecture, scalability, and security.

Essential Skills & Experience

Server Expertise:

  • Advanced proficiency in Windows Server OS (2012/2016/2019/2022), including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, and File Services.
  • Expertise in virtualization technologies like Hyper-V, including high availability, failover clustering, and disaster recovery.
  • Strong experience with server storage (NAS, SAN, DAS) deployment, configuration, and optimisation.

Technical Proficiency:

  • Experience with backup and recovery systems and disaster recovery planning/testing.
  • PowerShell scripting for server management and maintenance automation.
  • Knowledge of server performance tuning, load balancing, and capacity planning.
  • Proficiency with network protocols (DNS, DHCP, LDAP, VPNs) in a server context.

Cybersecurity:

  • Knowledge of server security best practices, including hardening, patching, and vulnerability management.
  • Experience with server-level security tools (firewalls, endpoint protection, intrusion detection/prevention).
  • Familiarity with industry compliance standards (e.g., Cyber Essentials, ISO 27001).

Soft Skills:

  • Excellent communication skills to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain high availability of client systems.
  • Attention to detail for documentation and process optimisation.

Desirable Skills (Not Essential):
