REPORTS TO: Building Principal
JOB GOALS: Performs the full range of professional duties including collaboration with school personnel and the special education department, and supports the documented needs of the student. Special Education Paraprofessionals should be self-starters, flexible, and intuitive in supporting the needs of students.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in the implementation of students’ Individual Education Plans and support in the preparation and organization of instructional materials and equipment, including the implementation of a Behavior Implementation Plan (BIP).
- Assist with and/or perform personal care and hygiene activities as necessitated by the needs of the student.
- Implement strategies and participate in ongoing training that prevents, minimizes, and manages behavioral challenges with dignity and safety for the student, including crisis response and physical management as needed and when appropriate.
- Participate in training and support the implementation of alternate communication devices as needed and ensuring access across settings.
- Participate in verbal de-escalation and crisis management training provided by the Iowa City Community School District.
- Maintain as requested student documentation, Medicaid logs, and progress monitoring.
- Support in the transition of students on and off the bus, as well as when needed riding the bus to support students based on student needs. Must complete bus rider training upon hire.
- Create and maintain positive working relationships with the school community, students, and other employees.
- Attend work on a prompt and regular basis.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Other duties as assigned.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 175 days + up to 2 additional days of in-service = 177 days. Salary and calendar year to be evaluated in accordance with the Negotiated Agreement between the Iowa City Education Association and the Iowa City Community School District.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the District’s policy on Evaluation, State Statute, and any applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
