We are currently recruiting for an Associate Editor on a full-time 12 month fixed term contract, ideally with a background in physical sciences, to join our Publishing team on a full-time basis.

Role Summary

The Associate Editor applies sound scientific judgement and works collaboratively and cross-functionally, providing a quality and efficient peer-review process across a portfolio of journals. Reporting to the Peer Review Team Manager, you will work with a team of Editors, Publishing Service Assistants, and other Associate Editors. You’ll also interact with teams across the business, such as Research Integrity, Journals Development and Marketing, as well as external stakeholders. You’ll play a part in maintaining and improving the efficiency of the peer review service and the quality of the content in journals, and your role will have a direct impact on supporting the physics community. This role offers the opportunity to see cutting-edge research, support customers through the publication process, and work with a variety of academic and professional stakeholders.

What will you be doing?

  • Manage peer review on a number of titles within the portfolio;
  • Maintain peer review turnaround times and acceptance levels;
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to increase peer review efficiency and quality;
  • Work with different teams (such as Journals Development, Marketing and Journalism) to identify key articles for promotion and improve journal visibility.

About you:

Successful applicants should demonstrate the following:

  • Experience in communicating with internal and external stakeholders;
  • Excellent attention to detail and decision-making ability;
  • Excellent time management, planning and team-working skills;
  • A scientific undergraduate degree is preferred, but we are happy to consider truly excellent candidates without;
  • Awareness of STM Publishing would be desirable, but it is not essential.

We know it is unusual for someone to tick every box so if you don’t meet all the criteria but demonstrate most of the skills and experience we are looking for, and have the enthusiasm to work with us, go ahead and apply.

We aim to review applications soon after they are received and will arrange interviews when there's someone we're keen to meet, therefore we may conduct interviews prior to the closing date and reserve the right to close the advert early.
