Ionix Advanced Technologies specialises in high performance, extreme environment piezoelectric devices, systems and materials, offering a range of sensors, actuators and transducer devices based on its novel piezoelectric materials, with applications in areas such as non-destructive testing/evaluation (NDT/E) condition monitoring and flow measurement in demanding environments.

Piezoelectric materials are used in a vast and rapidly expanding range of actuators and sensors.

They are the irreplaceable heart of systems such as medical ultrasound imaging, non-destructive testing (NDT), energy harvesting and SONAR comprising a $15bn annual market.

Ionix has developed novel range of high temperature piezoelectric materials, which can operate in extreme environments in excess of 600 °C and with which opens the opportunity to a whole host of new high temperature and extreme environment sensing technologies.

Purpose

Ionix are looking for an innovative Design & Development Engineer who will be a key contributor to the Product Development team, responsible for creating and implementing new ultrasonic sensor solutions for extreme environments (high temperature, radiation, pressure etc.).

Ionix’s technology spans materials science, mechanical and electrical engineering, physics and acoustics, and programming.

As such, you will work closely with colleagues of various disciplines to provide cutting edge solutions from pre-prototype stage through to full production.

The role will be varied, mixing conventional CAD design, process R&D, prototyping, testing, materials science, and manufacturing engineering.

Because of this, there is scope for a candidate who does not fit the traditional mechanical design engineer mould to contribute, and so applications from those who have other applicable skills to offer will be considered.

Applicants must have the right to live and work in the UK.

Responsibilities

  • Design, prototype, assemble, and test ultrasonic/acoustic sensors, by a range of acoustic, electrical, and mechanical means.
  • Design and produce technical drawings of mechanical components and assemblies of devices using 2D and 3D design tools.
  • Manage and contribute to projects to develop Ionix sensor & system products for customers across market sectors, including liaising with suppliers and stakeholders to ensure product or project requirements are met.
  • Contribute to the specification, design and prototyping of novel sensors, including producing risk register, timelines, and bill-of-materials.
  • Create thorough and accurate documentation where required for project management, experimental plans and records, quality, and intellectual property purposes.
  • Provide technical advice and support the business development process, working with sales and technical colleagues to achieve the collective commercial goals of the business.
  • Present progress and feedback from development activities to technical and commercial colleagues to support product development.

The candidate

Key skills and experience

  • Experience in ultrasonic transducer design, development, or manufacture, particularly piezo/piezo-composite technologies.
  • Engineering or Science qualification (Degree, HNC, or HND) with relevant industry experience.
  • Proficient in CAD, ideally Solid Works.
  • Strong understanding of machining, fabrication, assembly, and electro-mechanical products.
  • Ability to create and interpret technical drawings, GD&T, tolerances, limits, and fits.
  • Knowledge of engineering compliance, risk management, and quality management systems.
  • Experience with document control, change management, and configuration control.
  • Strong technical report writing and presentation skills.

Personal attributes

  • Hands-on engineer with practical prototyping and testing experience.
  • Analytical and innovative problem solver.
  • Entrepreneurial, resourceful, and proactive with a can-do attitude.
  • Strong communicator who works effectively across disciplines.
  • Self-motivated and able to deliver in a fast-paced SME environment.
  • Flexible and willing to take on new challenges and learn new skills.
  • Competitive salary, pension and performance bonuses.
  • Comprehensive health and wellness benefits including Cycle to Work Scheme, Holiday Buy-back and increasing leave on years of service.
  • Half day every first Friday of the month.
  • Acccess to Electric Car Scheme
  • Opportunities for professional development and career growth.
  • Collaborative and innovative work environment.
