IONATE is a deep tech scale‑up building the hardware and software backbone for smart grids. Our mission is to transform power systems – from grids and microgrids to renewables and data centres – unlocking the massive potential in this under‑innovated sector that touches every aspect of our modern lives. We are now looking for a Technical Project Manager to join our Projects team.

Requiring knowledge and experience in hardware development, design, manufacturing and deployment, you will play a key role in leading customer projects and product R&D initiatives, taking concepts and prototypes through to commercial products. You will drive end‑to‑end project success, managing timelines, budgets, and cross‑functional teams to implement our advanced HIT technology. Acting as a key interface between engineering, operations and customers, this position requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and proven experience in project delivery for hardware/software integrated products.

  • Project Leadership & Execution
    • Lead end‑to‑end delivery of projects from concept through commissioning and handover.
    • Develop, monitor and control project schedules, budgets and resource plans to ensure successful on‑time and on‑cost delivery.
    • Manage project execution in alignment with company standards, contractual obligations and quality/HSE requirements, identifying project risks and implementing proactive mitigation and contingency plans.
  • Technical Coordination
    • Oversee multidisciplinary engineering activities, including electronics, electrical, mechanical, control, embedded systems and software.
    • Review and approve technical documentation such as SLDs, wiring diagrams, layout drawings, specifications and BOMs.
    • Ensure technical compliance with grid codes, IEC/IEEE standards and customer requirements.
    • Coordinate with manufacturing partners, aligning procurement efforts, assembly, test and delivery as production scales through pilots to commercial rollouts with customers.
    • Oversee factory acceptance testing, ensuring all documentation, traceability and test results are properly reviewed and archived.
  • Procurement & Supply Chain
    • Develop and manage procurement plans aligned with project timelines and budgets.
    • Evaluate and select suppliers, subcontractors and service providers based on technical and commercial criteria.
    • Monitor supplier progress, manage purchase orders and track equipment deliveries to site.
    • Coordinate logistics for transportation, customs clearance and on‑site receipt of materials.
  • Site Installation & Commissioning
    • Manage site acceptance testing (SAT), energisation and grid synchronisation activities, coordinating with site teams, contractors and clients to ensure safe and compliant execution.
    • Ensure all as‑built documentation, test records and commissioning reports are completed and approved before handing over to the customer.
  • HSE & Compliance
    • Enforce health, safety and environmental (HSE) standards across all project phases in compliance with company and statutory requirements.
    • Conduct and review risk assessments and drive a culture of safety awareness and continuous improvement.
  • Financial & Contract Management
    • Prepare and manage project budgets, forecasts and financial reports.
    • Manage contract deliverables and change orders.
    • Support commercial teams with cost estimations and proposal preparation.
  • Stakeholder & Partner Management
    • Act as the primary point of contact for clients throughout the project lifecycle.
    • Coordinate and manage subcontractors, engineering partners and vendors to ensure alignment with project objectives.
    • Conduct regular progress reviews, design meetings and status reporting to all stakeholders.
    • Maintain strong communication channels between internal teams and external partners.
  • Documentation & Reporting
    • Ensure timely preparation and submission of project documentation, progress reports and technical deliverables.
    • Maintain accurate project records, drawings, correspondence and approvals.
    • Support lessons‑learned documentation and knowledge‑sharing initiatives post‑project completion.
  • Leadership & Continuous Improvement
    • Provide technical and managerial leadership to project teams, fostering collaboration and accountability.
    • Mentor and guide engineers and site staff in project delivery best practices.
    • Drive continuous improvement in project management processes, tools, and methodologies.
    • Promote innovation, standardisation and cost efficiency across projects.

What you will need

  • Degree in engineering or project management.
  • Project management qualification is a must in either PMP, PMI, PRINCE2 or equivalent.
  • Proven experience delivering complex engineering projects, ideally in power electronics and grid infrastructure.
  • Demonstrable technical understanding of hardware/software integration, manufacturing, site‑based commissioning and large‑scale field deployments.
  • Proven experience with risk mitigation, change orders and contingency plans.
  • Track record of managing project staff, budgets and external contractors in cross‑functional environments.
  • Familiarity with project management tools such as JIRA, Confluence, Zoho or equivalent.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, able to translate technical detail for varied audiences.
  • Experience producing and enforcing HSE policies, RAMS, HAZOPs, LOTO and safe working practices with proper PPE.
  • Willingness to travel to customer sites nationally and internationally on short notice to conduct site surveys, oversee deployments and develop customer relationships.

It would be useful to have

  • Familiarity with renewable energy integration and grid studies.
  • Knowledge of asset lifecycle management and O&M considerations.
  • Ability to develop KPIs, dashboards and project performance metrics.
  • Exposure to contract negotiation and stakeholder engagement strategies.
  • Experience in cost optimisation and value engineering.
  • Awareness of sustainability, environmental impact and energy efficiency practices.

Benefits

  • Employee Option Plan: You get equity in IONATE, so as we succeed so do you.
  • Private Medical & Dental Insurance: From day one, we provide you with full, comprehensive private medical and dental cover through Bupa. You also have the option to add any dependents to your cover.
  • Company pension: a flexible, and sustainable pension product to help you plan for your future.
  • Career Development: It's important to us that you have the opportunity for ongoing professional development and career growth. You will receive an annual budget for professional development and work with your team to set and reach goals every year.
  • Flexible working schedules: You will have the flexibility for work‑from‑home arrangements.
  • Cycle to Work Scheme: Low carbon travel is important for everyone, so we have in place a cycle scheme to help you purchase a bicycle.
  • Slow travel: We believe in a low carbon future, so if you wish to travel by a lower carbon method – but it takes much longer than flying – we will give you an extra 2 slow travel days per year.

About IONATE

Driven by first‑principles engineering, IONATE is transforming power systems for the energy transition. Our hardware is the Hybrid Intelligent Transformer (HIT): a new building block for the power grid and everything connecting. It integrates into the network like a transformer but solves key power quality issues through all‑in‑one power flow control. Beyond the passive voltage step, it provides data visibility, stepless and dynamic voltage control, harmonics removal and reactive power control with millisecond‑precision. Its innovative hybrid design leveraging magnetic control makes it a robust, reliable and affordable upgrade. While deployed to remove constraints and prevent issues, HITs effectively light up real‑time control nodes for the very first time. Once placed in strategic points of the network, IONATE's AI platform can coordinate them to form a true smart system, coupling top‑down grid orchestration with instantaneous bottom‑up control in the physics. This full stack will achieve real‑time system optimisation and turn the passive old grid into a flexible, decentralised platform that catalyses innovation. You'll work on something that matters. The most rewarding aspect of our job is seeing what we build in the lab get used in the real world. As our tech gets used in solar farms, batteries and electricity grids, your work will help shape the future of the green energy transition. The thinking you'll do here is not your average exercises on repeat. Building a brand‑new class of tech requires cutting‑edge ideas. If you like to solve unconventional problems, to be given freedom to explore, to challenge – and be challenged by – field experts, you will fit just right in. The rocket ship is taking off. Our innovation has been proven and demand is immense. IONATE is now rapidly scaling up and undertaking global projects. Joining early and working side‑by‑side with our leadership team means ample opportunity to grow your role together with our company. IONATE has a friendly team that collaborates and supports one‑another. If you don't fit all the description above, but you are passionate about the work we are doing and could add value to our team, please get in touch. We believe in making positions fit the skills of people, not the other way around. We are also committed to providing equal opportunities, an inclusive work environment and fairness for everyone. We value diversity in race, gender identity, sexuality, age, family or civil status, disability, religion or ethnicity and encourage you to apply wherever you come from.
