IONATE is a deep technology scale-up building the technology backbone for smart grids. We are seeking a Senior Power System Engineer to take ownership of power system modelling, leading projects from early-stage concept to commercial deployment in the field. With a strong focus on power systems development, high-granularity data analysis and grid modelling, you will play a central role in leading or participating in design reviews and technical discussions. You will bring a rigorous engineering mindset, combining innovative thinking with sound technical reasoning to solve complex challenges. In addition, you will support business development, project execution, and test activities, helping to ensure that all these are completed within schedule and budget.
What you will do:
- Develop and maintain high-fidelity power system models to support grid analysis, requirements definition, and product development.
- Perform power system simulations and EMT simulations including load flow, short-circuit and fault analysis, transient stability, fault-ride through, and harmonic propagation studies.
- Conduct detailed data analysis to evaluate network behaviour, power quality, dynamic performance, and overall system reliability.
- Lead technical design reviews and provide engineering guidance across cross-functional teams.
- Contribute to IONATE's product architecture definition and the integration of our solution into electrical networks, ensuring compliance with applicable grid codes and regulatory standards.
- Collaborate closely with hardware, software, transformer, and control engineers to validate system-level performance from simulation through to field deployment.
- Provide technical input to business development activities, including feasibility assessment, technical proposals, and customer engagements.
- Produce clear, structured technical documentation of methodologies, assumptions, analysis, and results to support internal governance and external certification processes.
What you will need:
- A degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or related discipline.
- Hands-on experience in electrical power system design, modelling and simulation, including power electronics dominated networks (e.g., HVDC, STATCOM, FACTS, grid-forming/grid-following converters).
- Strong proficiency in power system simulation tools such as PSCAD or DIgSILENT PowerFactory.
- Solid understanding of power system fundamentals, including protection principles, stability, fault behaviour, harmonics, and grid code compliance.
- Experience translating customer or system-level requirements into simulation models and technical specifications.
- Strong problem-solving capability, with the ability to tackle unfamiliar and complex technical challenges independently.
- High level of ownership and delivery focus, with experience managing work packages or projects end-to-end.
- Clear and structured technical communication skills (written and verbal), including the ability to present complex analysis to both technical and non-technical stakeholders or customers.
It would be useful to have:
- Proven experience in designing and modelling power systems related to Data Centres or Smart Grids.
- Proficient in working with power electronics-driven networks, such as HVDC, STATCOM, FACTS, and converters that are grid-forming or grid-following.
- Skilled in utilising MATLAB and Simulink for modelling control systems and conducting dynamic analysis.
- Familiar with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing and real-time digital simulation tools, for instance, RTDS.
- Knowledgeable about cybersecurity issues relevant to modern grid-connected systems.
- Experience aiding certification processes or collaborating with international grid codes and standards, including IEC, IEEE, and ENTSO-E.
Benefits:
- Employee Option Plan: You get equity in IONATE, so as we succeed so do you.
- Private Medical & Dental Insurance: From day one, we provide you with full, comprehensive private medical and dental cover through Bupa. You also have the option to add any dependents to your cover.
- Company pension: a flexible, and sustainable pension product to help you plan for your future.
- Career Development: It's important to us that you have the opportunity for ongoing professional development and career growth. You will receive an annual budget for professional development and work with your team to set and reach goals every year.
- Flexible working schedules: You will have the flexibility for work-from-home arrangements.
- Cycle to Work Scheme: Low carbon travel is important for everyone, so we have in place a cycle scheme to help you purchase a bicycle.
- Slow travel: We believe in a low carbon future, so if you wish to travel by a lower carbon method – but it takes much longer than flying – we will give you an extra 2 slow travel days per year.
