£45-50k / On-site - London

IONATE is a deep tech scale-up building the hardware and software backbone for smart grids. Our mission is to transform power systems - from grids and microgrids to renewables and datacentres - unlocking the massive potential in this under-innovated sector that touches every aspect of our modern lives. We are now looking for an Electro-mechanical Technician (Lab Manager) to join our Hardware team. You will play a critical role in building, testing and improving our electro-mechanical systems.

Working across our Hybrid Intelligent Transformer (HIT) technology and associated subsystems, you will ensure our products are made to the highest levels of quality, reliability and compliance. You will also be responsible for management of our prototyping workshop, ensuring it remains well-organised and is utilised to its fullest potential. You will be closely embedded within our multidisciplinary hardware team, collaborating with mechanical engineers, power electronics designers and project managers to ensure that projects are delivered efficiently and to tight timelines.

What you will do:

  • Be responsible for day-to-day management of our prototyping workshop, implementing improvements and making sure it remains safe, efficient and well-organised.
  • Build, modify and test sheet metal components and cabinet enclosures, working closely with mechanical engineers and manufacturing partners.
  • Assemble and test air-to-air and liquid-to-air cooling systems for high-power components and power modules.
  • Create industrial control panel wiring using DIN rail components.
  • Use our workshop to build and test new prototype concepts.
  • Generate actionable design feedback by participating in hands-on design validation and testing in the lab/workshop and field environments as part of our multi-disciplinary team.
  • Create and maintain test documentation, including test plans, test procedures, test specifications, and detailed technical reports.
  • Contribute to component ordering, working alongside procurement specialists to maintain inventory tracking.

Requirements

What you will need:

  • Experience working in a workshop environment, with a strong understanding of best practices for organisation, procedures and EHS.
  • Strong hands-on experience building, testing and troubleshooting electro-mechanical systems.
  • Hands-on prototyping experience (e.g. hand tools, 3D printing, assembly, machining).
  • Proficiency with standard electrical test and measurement equipment: oscilloscopes, multi-meters, insulation testers, power supplies and data acquisition systems.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively within cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic start-up environment.
  • Willing to travel nationally and internationally when required for testing/commissioning.

It would be useful to have:

  • Solid understanding of sheet metal part design and manufacturing techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex technical drawings, wiring diagrams, PCB schematics, and system block diagrams.
  • Experience with environmental or reliability testing (vibration, thermal cycling, humidity, EMI).
  • Working knowledge of high-voltage and high-power system testing (ideally experience with systems up to 1 kV).

Benefits

  • Employee Option Plan: You get equity in IONATE, so as we succeed so do you.
  • Private Medical & Dental Insurance: From day one, we provide you with full, comprehensive private medical and dental cover through Bupa. You also have the option to add any dependents to your cover.
  • Company pension: a flexible, and sustainable pension product to help you plan for your future.
  • Career Development: It’s important to us that you have the opportunity for ongoing professional development and career growth. You will receive an annual budget for professional development and work with your team to set and reach goals every year.
  • Flexible working schedules: You will have the flexibility for work-from-home arrangements.
  • Cycle to Work Scheme: Low carbon travel is important for everyone, so we have in place a cycle scheme to help you purchase a bicycle.
  • Slow travel: We believe in a low carbon future, so if you wish to travel by a lower carbon method – but it takes much longer than flying - we will give you an extra 2 slow travel days per year.
