We're supporting a major UK Government department looking for an experienced Technical Architect to join a multidisciplinary digital team working on a brand-new cloud data platform.

Key Responsibilities

  • Solution Design & Ticket Decomposition: Translate user requirements into system-level technical designs and break them down into discrete tickets with clear acceptance criteria for front-end, data, and DevOps engineers.
  • Architecture Review & Assurance: Review the existing AWS platform architecture, ensure alignment with AWS frameworks, and maintain technical documentation.
  • Systems Design & Diagnostics: Identify system design bottlenecks, troubleshoot complex technical issues, and liaise directly with DevOps to resolve them.
  • Technical Diagramming: Create sustainable high- and low-level system designs (the team uses Mermaid for creating reusable diagrams).

Who You Are

Experience and technical detail are more important than specific qualifications for this role. We are looking for candidates with a strong blend of the following:

  • Core Technical Stack: Strong systems design experience in AWS (Cloud, DevOps, or Data engineers with at least 2 years of Technical Architecture experience are highly sought after). An Azure or GCP background is helpful if combined with AWS.
  • Key Tools: Solid understanding of Kubernetes, Docker containerisation, and GitHub Actions. You must understand the architectural importance of using Terraform (though you won't need to write it in detail yourself).
  • Domain Experience: Backgrounds in Analytical or Data Platforms are highly advantageous. Central Government experience is desirable but not mandatory.
  • Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills to tailor technical specifications to different engineering disciplines.
