An established engineering organisation serving the oil and gas sector is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join its Aberdeen-based team. This is a senior-level technical role requiring deep expertise in the design and development of oilfield downhole tools. The successful candidate will play a key role in product development, project delivery, engineering analysis, and cross-functional collaboration. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to high-value engineering projects from concept through to product validation and commercial delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage mechanical design projects from concept to finished product.
- Develop detailed 3D models and manufacturing drawings in line with industry and internal standards.
- Perform component and assembly-level mathematical analysis, including stress and load calculations.
- Conduct tolerance stack-up studies and technical design reviews.
- Design and support product validation testing, including hands-on participation.
- Develop test equipment for product verification to relevant industry standards.
- Prepare engineering cost estimates for product development and enhancement.
- Manage projects to meet budgetary and delivery targets.
- Provide technical support to internal teams, clients, and vendors.
- Contribute to product viability assessments and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Support assembly and testing of new product developments.
- Liaise with local and international stakeholders to maximise commercial opportunities.
- Promote a collaborative, high-performance engineering culture.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- HNC or Degree in Mechanical, Product, or Electro-Mechanical Engineering (or related discipline).
- Minimum 10 years' relevant engineering experience.
- Demonstrable experience designing oilfield downhole tools (essential).
- Advanced proficiency in CAD systems (SolidWorks or Inventor preferred).
- Strong analytical capability with experience performing stress and load calculations.
- Experience conducting tolerance analysis at assembly level.
- Proven ability to solve complex client engineering challenges.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively under pressure.
- Self-motivated, commercially aware, and team-oriented.
