We are partnering with a highly technical, early-stage organisation building a next-generation, AI-driven decision platform. They are looking for a Principal / Lead Mathematician to own the mathematical foundation that underpins the entire system. This is a rare opportunity to sit at the heart of product design - translating human problem-solving processes into rigorous mathematical, algorithmic and optimisation models that power summarisation, semantic search, and decision-support workflows.
You will lead the design and validation of core algorithms, working closely with Data Scientists and Engineers to embed mathematically sound models into a modular, cloud-native platform.
What you will be doing:
- Designing end-to-end mathematical models that translate real-world workflows into executable system logic
- Applying algebraic modelling, graph theory, optimisation and statistics to complex, unstructured data problems
- Prototyping and validating algorithms in Python and MATLAB
- Shaping the mathematical backbone of vector search, intent extraction and LLM-driven workflows
- Producing clear, auditable documentation in LaTeX and Jupyter

How to prepare for a job interview at iO Associates
✨Know Your Maths Inside Out
Make sure you brush up on your mathematical concepts, especially algebraic modelling, graph theory, and optimisation. Be ready to discuss how you've applied these in real-world scenarios, as this will show your depth of understanding and practical experience.
✨Showcase Your Coding Skills
Since you'll be prototyping algorithms in Python and MATLAB, it’s crucial to demonstrate your coding abilities. Prepare to talk about specific projects where you've used these languages, and if possible, bring along examples of your work or even a small demo to impress the interviewers.
✨Prepare for Problem-Solving Questions
Expect to face questions that test your problem-solving skills. Practice explaining your thought process clearly and logically when tackling complex data problems. This will help the interviewers see how you approach challenges and develop solutions.
✨Document Your Work
Since producing clear documentation is part of the role, be prepared to discuss how you’ve documented your previous projects. Familiarise yourself with LaTeX and Jupyter, and consider bringing samples of your documentation to showcase your attention to detail and clarity in communication.
