A leading Central Government organisation is seeking an experienced Data Protection Lead to join its Data Governance team on an initial 6‑month contract. This is a hands‑on operational role, supporting digital delivery teams by embedding privacy‑by‑design principles, managing data protection risks and ensuring products and services remain compliant while moving at pace.

You will work closely with product, technology and analytics teams to deliver practical data protection solutions, including DPIAs, privacy notices, records of processing activities and risk assessments. The role requires someone who can confidently understand complex digital products, assess privacy risks and provide pragmatic advice that enables delivery.

Experience & Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years' experience in data protection and privacy roles, with strong practical delivery experience.
  • Proven experience delivering Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) and supporting privacy risk assessments.
  • Strong understanding of privacy‑by‑design principles and applying data protection controls within digital products and services.
  • Experience advising on PECR, cookies, analytics, tracking technologies and consent models is highly desirable.
  • Ability to analyse complex technical products and identify privacy, compliance and operational risks.
  • Strong understanding of UK GDPR and data protection legislation.
  • Experience working collaboratively with technical teams, product teams and business stakeholders.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex privacy requirements to non‑technical audiences.
  • Pragmatic problem‑solving approach with excellent attention to detail.
  • Experience within Government, public sector or digital delivery environments is desirable.
  • Understanding of emerging technologies, including AI risk management, would be beneficial.

  • Relevant privacy qualification desirable, including:
    • Data Protection Practitioner Certificate
    • CIPP/E
    • CIPM
    • CIPT
    • UK GDPR Practitioner qualification
    • Equivalent practical experience will also be considered.
