The Role
We are looking for an experienced Maintenance Fitter / Mechanical Engineer with welding and fabrication skills to join our team in a permanent, long-term position. You will spend the majority of your working week at an established customer's manufacturing site in Bedford, carrying out mechanical maintenance, repairs, fault finding, welding and fabrication. This position has become available following the retirement of a team member who had been with us for more than 20 years, making this an excellent opportunity for someone looking for a secure, long-term role.
What You'll Be Doing
- Planned and reactive mechanical maintenance
- Fault finding and repairing manufacturing machinery
- Mechanical fitting and general repairs
- Replacing worn or damaged mechanical components
- MIG and TIG welding
- General fabrication and modification work
- Machinery improvements and modifications
- General factory and workshop maintenance
You will be trusted to use your experience and initiative to diagnose mechanical problems and carry out practical, effective repairs.
What We're Looking For

- Maintenance Engineers with a strong mechanical background
- Fabricator/Welders with industrial maintenance experience
You will ideally have:
- Good mechanical maintenance and repair experience
- Experience fault finding on industrial or manufacturing machinery
- MIG and TIG welding experience
- General fabrication and fitting skills
- Good practical problem-solving skills
- Confidence using hand tools, power tools and workshop equipment
- The ability to work independently and use your own initiative
- A good understanding of health and safety in an industrial environment
Location & Travel
We are looking for someone based in or around the Melton Mowbray / Leicestershire area, as the role will occasionally involve collecting parts, materials or equipment from our local base. Your main place of work will be at our customer's manufacturing site in Bedford, travelling directly to site each day using your own vehicle. A full UK driving licence and access to a reliable vehicle are therefore required.
Hours & Pay
Monday to Friday: 8:00am–4:30pm
30-minute unpaid lunch
40 hours per week £17.00–£20.00 per hour, depending on experience. Equivalent to approximately £35,360–£41,600 per year based on a 40-hour week. This is a permanent, days-based position with no rotating shifts.
