We’re looking for an ambitious Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join a growing commercial team delivering exciting rail and civil engineering projects across Wales. This is a great opportunity for an Assistant QS looking to develop their commercial skills, gain hands-on project experience and build a long-term career within the infrastructure sector. You’ll work across a diverse portfolio of projects including rail infrastructure, stations, bridges, structures, highways, tunnels, embankments, and environmental schemes, supporting delivery for major clients including Network Rail and Transport for Wales.
The Role
Working alongside experienced Quantity Surveyors and Project Managers, you’ll support the commercial management of projects and work packages, gaining exposure to the full project lifecycle from procurement through to final account. You’ll be given the support and responsibility to develop your skills, build your commercial knowledge and progress towards a Project QS role.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Support the commercial management of rail and civil engineering projects
- Assist with valuations, applications for payment and cost reporting
- Help prepare and maintain CVRs, forecasts and commercial reports
- Assist with subcontract procurement and payments
- Support the management of subcontractor accounts and contractual compliance
- Assist with identifying and managing change, compensation events, and early warnings
- Gain practical experience working with NEC and Network Rail forms of contract
- Monitor project costs, progress, and commercial performance
- Work closely with Project Managers, Site Managers and the wider commercial team
- Assist with final accounts and project close-out
- Build effective relationships with clients, subcontractors, and suppliers
- Contribute to improving commercial processes and best practice
What We’re Looking For
We’re interested in candidates who are driven, commercially minded and keen to develop within the rail and civil engineering sector. You’ll ideally have:
- Some experience within Quantity Surveying or commercial management
- Experience or an interest in rail, civil engineering or infrastructure
- An understanding of construction contracts, ideally NEC
- Good numerical and analytical skills
- Strong communication and organisational skills
- The ability to manage priorities and work as part of a team
- A proactive attitude and willingness to learn
- A relevant degree, HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or a related discipline
