I’m currently working with a well-established engineering business that’s looking to add an Electrical Design Engineer (or Senior Electrical Design Engineer, depending on experience) to their team.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who enjoys hands-on, technically focused work and wants to be part of a close-knit, collaborative engineering department. You’ll be involved in delivering complex, high-integrity design projects that directly support the UK’s continuous at-sea deterrent (CASD) — contributing to keeping our Royal Navy operational and our nation safe.

The Role

You’ll be responsible for the electrical design and technical compliance of bespoke systems, ensuring designs meet customer, safety, and legislative requirements. Working closely with mechanical engineers, you’ll help deliver fully integrated and compliant design solutions from concept through to manufacture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce detailed electrical designs and schematics using SolidWorks Electrical or E-Plan, plus supporting Bills of Materials.
  • Create design documentation such as performance calculations, test plans, and component selection justifications.
  • Ensure all electrical designs meet safety, technical, and legislative standards.
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineering teams to deliver complete integrated solutions.
  • Follow structured design processes to achieve all validations, approvals, and mitigations at the correct stages.
  • Support testing and automation, including writing and executing test plans.

What They’re Looking For

  • Degree qualified or equivalent experience in Electrical/Control Engineering.
  • 3+ years’ experience (5+ years for Senior level) in Power & Electrical Design, ideally within Control Panels or Power Distribution.
  • Strong experience with Variable Speed Drives, Motor Starter Panels, PLC/Control Systems (ProfiBus, ProfiNet, TIA Portal).
  • Proven Control & Instrumentation design capability.
  • Understanding of Testing & Automation (NI Hardware / LabVIEW experience desirable).
  • Proficiency in E-Plan or SolidWorks Electrical (training available for strong candidates).
  • Experience within Defence, Marine, or Aerospace sectors is advantageous.
  • Hands-on approach, strong teamwork, and excellent communication skills.

Working Hours & Flexibility

  • 37-hour week:
  • Mon–Thu: 07:30–16:00
  • Fri: 07:30–12:30
  • Flexible start (06:30–08:30) and finish (15:00–17:00).
  • On-site presence preferred — home working may be considered up to one day per week for the right person.

Benefits & Culture

  • 25 days holiday + bank holidays (including Christmas shutdown).
  • Aegon pension with auto-enrolment.
  • Company Sick Pay Scheme after 2 years (up to 8 weeks with service).
  • Life Assurance (3× salary after 2 years).
  • Employee Assistance Programme: 24/7 GP line, counselling, legal and financial support, and shopping discounts.
  • Casual business dress & dress-down Fridays.
  • Subsidised festive celebration and a genuinely friendly, inclusive culture.
  • Free on-street parking (ample availability due to early start times).
  • Just inside the Clean Air Zone, but easy 10-minute walk from free parking outside the zone.

Why You’ll Love It

This is a small, non-hierarchical business where everyone — including the Directors — is hands-on, approachable, and invested in what they do. You’ll be part of a skilled, supportive team that designs, manufactures, and assembles everything on site.

The company’s values are built around PRIDE – Professionalism, Respect, Innovation, Development & Ethics, and they truly live by them.
