Head of Risk in City of London

Role Overview

We\’re looking for a Head of Risk for our public sector client based in Aberdeen or Edinburgh on an initial contract paying up to £950 per day Inside IR35.

This role offers hybrid working, with an expectation to attend the office in Aberdeen or Edinburgh several days per week.

You will need to hold extensive experience in financial and investment risk management, ideally gained within infrastructure finance, investment banking, or public investment institutions.

Key Responsibilities

The successful Head of Risk will be responsible for leading the development and implementation of an enterprise-wide risk management framework, building capability from the ground up, and ensuring robust governance across all investment activities.

The successful Head of Risk will possess proven skills working with the following:

• Designing and implementing enterprise-wide risk management frameworks
• Defining and maintaining risk appetite statements
• Leading identification and monitoring of credit, market, liquidity, and counterparty risks
• Overseeing risk‑adjusted performance across equity, infrastructure, guarantees, loans, and grants
• Conducting stress testing and scenario analysis
• Maintaining the strategic risk register and producing reports for the Board and Audit & Risk Committee
• Providing second‑line oversight and challenge on investment proposals and portfolio performance
• Establishing risk policies, standards, and procedures
• Promoting a risk‑aware culture and leading a high‑performing team
• Ensuring compliance with UK financial regulations

Key Qualifications

Essential Skills and Experience:

• Strong background in financial risk management within investment, infrastructure, or public investment sectors
• Deep knowledge of UK regulatory frameworks and public‑private investment structures
• Professional qualifications such as RM, CFA, or PRM

Desirable:

• Experience in renewable energy or infrastructure sectors
• Familiarity with government reporting and assurance requirements
• Experience in start‑up or growth environments
• Background in investment funds or wealth management
• Knowledge of revaluation and economic capital modelling
