These roles sit in the Public Protection Unit, which is made up of several specialist units with the responsibility of keeping people safe from harm and investigating offences committed against the most vulnerable. The Child Abuse Investigation Team (CAIT) and Child Exploitation Team (CET) are included in this unit. You will liaise with other units in the team, including IIOC and CEMM.

Working arrangements include being based in a South West Constabulary, with a need to be mobile from this site for enquiries with the public and to attend other police premises. Due to the sensitive nature of the cases, there is no hybrid or remote working for investigators, although occasionally a working from home day for admin work may be authorised. You will need to be deployable and available for briefings based on daily demand. A full UK driving licence is required as you will have access to a police vehicle.

Due to the nature of these cases, you will be placed on an 8-week rotation, with day and late shifts. Early shifts are from 0800-1600/1700 and late shifts from 1200-2000, with one weekend in 8 on early shift. This is a Monday to Friday role, with core hours of 0800-1600. Pay for both roles is Β£172.50 per day. Flexible working, such as part-time or amended shift times, can be considered.

Skills required:

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Full UK driving licence
  • ABE trained
  • Experience in child abuse and exploitation investigations
  • SUDIC (child death) experience
  • Advanced interviewer (suspect or victims)
  • Experience working within a multi-agency team
  • Experience in child/adult protection or safeguarding
  • Ability to interpret data and evaluate information from multiple sources
  • Experience as a disclosure officer for serious and complex crime
  • Experience as an exhibits officer for serious and complex crime

Main Responsibilities:

  • Qualified PIP 2 investigator – having passed the NIE, DDP course and successfully completed tutorship
  • Conduct and carry out investigations relating to Public Protection areas of responsibility at the direction of managers
  • Work with witnesses, draft and take statements
  • Take possession of and accurately record exhibits in accordance with legal requirements and policies
  • Participate in multi-agency meetings to share information and safeguard vulnerable individuals
  • Produce relevant reports/files and prepare files for presentation to the CPS, presenting evidence that may be used in court (criminal/family)
  • Work to an agreed case investigation plan and adhere to timeframes
  • Work closely as OIC with CPS lawyers and prosecution barristers, attending all meetings
  • Attend court hearings and trials as OIC and witness, giving evidence where required
  • Maintain and use a good working knowledge of legislation, policy, and procedure
  • Update databases and charts for use in case investigation
  • Prioritise and organise own workload to ensure adherence to required standards
  • Contribute to the development of intelligence relating to Public Protection areas by using analytical skills and reviewing databases, collecting and inputting intelligence where required
  • Collate documentary evidence for the preparation of civil orders and disruption processes, liaising with legal departments as necessary
  • Liaise with other forces and outside agencies to further investigations or identify risk
  • Maintain an accurate record of daily activities using an Investigators Day book or pocket notebook
