This 12-month maternity cover Trainee Process Engineer role offers the chance to develop practical process engineering experience within our biodiesel plant at Seal Sands, Teesside.
Supporting experienced colleagues, you’ll help monitor plant performance, maintain engineering documentation, support technical problem solving and contribute to process improvement projects. We’re looking for a recent graduate or early-career engineer with a degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering or a closely related subject, and a strong interest in process manufacturing, sustainability and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities- Assisting with process flow diagrams (PFDs) and piping & instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs)
- Supporting day-to-day operations to keep systems running smoothly
- Working with operators to resolve technical problems
- Participating in risk assessments for example HAZOP studies
- Assisting in engineering projects such as plant upgrades, new equipment installation
- Coordinating with multidisciplinary teams - mechanical, electrical, etc.
- Managing timelines, budgets, and documentation (very basic – at first but can be progressed)
- Looking for cost-saving or efficiency opportunities
- Supporting sustainability initiatives (energy reduction, waste minimisation)
- Degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering or a closely related discipline
- Recent graduate or early-career candidate with an interest in developing within a process manufacturing, chemical, biofuels, energy or industrial plant environment
- Understanding of core chemical/process engineering principles such as mass balance, heat transfer, fluid flow, separation processes and reaction engineering
- Familiarity with process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) or other engineering documentation would be advantageous
- Some exposure to process safety principles, risk assessments, HAZOP studies or Management of Change processes would be beneficial, but full training will be provided
- Experience gained through a placement year, internship, industrial project, university project or similar practical environment would be desirable
- Interest in sustainability, energy efficiency, waste reduction, renewable fuels or continuous improvement within a production environment
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret technical information and plant data
- Good attention to detail, with a structured and accurate approach to documentation, calculations and follow-up actions
- Confident communicator who can build effective working relationships with Operations, Engineering, Laboratory and other site teams
- Curious and proactive, with a willingness to learn from experienced colleagues and develop practical process engineering knowledge
- Able to work safely and responsibly in a production/plant environment, following procedures and asking questions where needed
- Organised and able to manage priorities, actions and basic project documentation with support
- Comfortable using Excel and other IT systems to analyse data, track actions and support reporting
- Practical, hands-on approach with an interest in understanding how plant processes work in real operating conditions
