Job Overview
Applications are invited for an exciting fixed term post at North Bristol NHS Trust.
Main duties of the job:
The post holder will have a varied programme covering a range of some of the above specialities dictated by their clinical interest and expertise.

North Bristol NHS Trust is the largest Trust in the South-West region providing medical, surgical, neonatal and maternity care for a population of almost a million people in the Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset area, employing more than 9,300 staff, with a revenue budget in excess of £500 million.
The Brunel Building has 802 beds, 75% of which are single occupancy. The Womens and Childrens Centre has a further 152 beds. There is a modern theatre complex over 2 floors of 29 theatres and interventional suites. Individual multipurpose medirooms provide the environment for admission, recovery and discharge, and offer the facility for performing regional blocks. There is a state of the art 46 bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) adjacent to the operating theatres, emergency department and imaging.
The Brunel Building has brought together the specialist teams formerly based at Frenchay Hospital and Southmead Hospital. These include regional adult services in Orthopaedics, Plastic Surgery and Burns, Neurosurgery, Vascular surgery, Urology and Renal services. NBT is a designated Major Trauma Centre servicing the Severn Network in the South West. The Anaesthetic department became ACSA accredited in 2020 and is currently going through its re-accreditation process.
Relevant clinical activity includes:
- Vascular Network, centralised in the SW to NBT in Oct 2014, providing regional endovascular services
- Expanding regional anaesthesia service providing support to trauma and plastic surgery
- Colorectal centre leading ERAS service providing a full range of colorectal services
- Bristol Urology Institute tertiary referral centre for the South West and specialist robotic surgery
- Specialist Elective Orthopaedic Centre including complex deformity spinal surgery
- Designated Major Trauma Centre
- Bariatric Unit
- Large Neurosurgical centre active research and clinical trial agenda with innovative treatments not delivered elsewhere in the UK
- Stroke Thrombectomy Service (24/7)
- Plastics and Burns Unit
- Breast Care Centre providing majority of services as day case
- Busy Obstetric Unit with 6500 deliveries per year
- Pain Clinic with an international reputation for Spinal Cord Stimulator insertion
- An integrated pre-operative service including ERAS, Complex medical assessment, CPET, and Pharmacy
The Southmead Hospital Bristol site includes the maternity department and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and the new Bristol Breast Care Centre, clinical research teams and Severn Pathology. The Trust has teaching status and is linked with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England. The appointee will be required to reside no more than 30 minutes travelling time (by road) from the Southmead Hospital site for on-call purposes.

Applicants are required to be on the Specialist Register and have a CCT in Anaesthesia or be within six months of obtaining it by the interview date. Full Registration with the GMC is essential. The post is based at Southmead Hospital. Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent is essential. The successful candidate will be employed under Terms & Conditions of Service for Consultants (England) 2003.

- Evidence of CPET
- Qualifications: MB BS (or equivalent), Maintain Full registration with the GMC, Must have CCT in anaesthesia and have been entered on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of the appointment, Specialist registrars that do not hold a CCT must be due to be awarded one within 6 months of the interview date, Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD or MS), Qualification in teaching (Diploma or higher), European Diploma in Regional Anaesthesia
- Experience: Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent), Minimum of 6 years postgraduate experience, three years as a registrar in an approved training post, or equivalent. Part of this period may be in a post of equivalent responsibility and training potential, Evidence of extensive experience in sub-specialties reflected in the job plan (Regional, Obstetrics, Neuro, POAC, General), Experience of non-UK hospital systems and practices
- Knowledge: Evidence of recent CME/ reasonable training progression at this stage of career, Experience in audit project and written up, Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues, Knowledge of political context within which we operate, Faculty or organisational role of an educational course or conference, Completion of a general management course or programme, Demonstration of involvement in clinical directorate management, Demonstration of significant change management
- Skills: Proven teaching ability, Willingness to undertake teaching of medical under-graduates & postgraduates, Proven track record in research, Evidence of relevant publications in peer reviewed journals, Ability to teach effectively
- Personal Requirements: Ability to lead a team and form effective working relationships within a team, Good written communication skills, Evidence of the ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels.
