Lead Technician
At our Derby Victory Road laboratory, we are seeking a Lead Technician to join our analytical team. This is an exciting opportunity to work on advanced materials testing, contributing to high-profile projects across industries such as aerospace, power, construction, renewables, and engineering.
Qualifications
- Degree or HND in Science / Engineering (or equivalent experience).
- Experienced in a laboratory environment (metallurgy background preferred).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal).
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
Desirable
- Knowledge of metallurgical sample preparation techniques.
- Experience in a materials testing or analytical laboratory.
About the Opportunity
You will also carry out sample preparation using metallurgical techniques (cutting, mounting, and polishing). This role combines hands-on technical expertise with responsibility for ensuring laboratory quality standards, turnaround times, and client requirements are consistently met.
Key activities
- Perform laboratory testing on metallic samples (XRF, C&S combustion, O/H/N).
- Prepare samples using metallurgical preparation techniques.
- Manage personal workload to meet agreed KPI turnaround targets.
- Carry out routine quality control checks and maintain laboratory records.
- Ensure analytical equipment is well-maintained and operating to the highest standard.
- Liaise with the Section Head, team members, and clients regarding testing, turnaround requirements, and technical queries.
