New Scientist offers a learning and development opportunity open to anyone from an ethnic minority background. The internship runs for six months, with compensation at the 2022 London Living Wage, based in the High Street Kensington office, London. This year, we are recruiting two news interns and one video intern.
Responsibilities
- News intern: receive one-to-one mentoring from an experienced journalist; on-the-job training in news and features writing, subediting, and audience engagement; contribute work that is published online and in print.
- Video intern: learn to produce scientific videos from idea to publication; source footage from researchers; script and edit short form news videos; publish across online and social platforms; participate in shoots and receive camerawork training; compile a showreel demonstrating skills.
Across both tracks: participate in podcasts and events as eligible during the internship.
Qualifications and requirements
- You will have completed a science, technology, engineering, mathematics or computing degree by the start of the internship.
- You have demonstrable interest in writing, video editing or journalism.
- You have the right to work in the UK.
Application materials: submit a 200-word statement explaining how you meet the requirements and which internship position you are applying for (news or video), and why you are the right person for this internship.
For the news intern: write an article on a recent scientific discovery between 500 and 800 words.
For the video intern: create a 2–3 minute video on a scientific topic that interests you.
Documents and files: articles should be a plain Word document with no special formatting; include your name in the file name but not in the document text. Videos should be uploaded as unlisted to YouTube and a link pasted at the end of the 200-word statement (the link is not included in the word count).
Application submission: paste your 200-word statement in the application box and include a link to your video if you have created one. Instead of uploading a CV, include your science article if you have written one.
Additional information: The internship is a positive action scheme under the Equality Act 2010. Applicants must have the right to work in the UK. This program is designed to provide opportunities regardless of background and is subject to the terms of the program.
