Join an international team of passionate colleagues working to improve the quality and quantity of environmental and climate media worldwide. The environment programme of Internews, the Earth Journalism Network (EJN), is seeking an assistant to support with editorial, communications and administrative tasks. This position offers the opportunity to develop your skills, engage with professional journalists from around the world working on important stories, and build your understanding of some of the most pressing environmental issues of the day and how media can contribute to impactful change, on topics such as climate change, biodiversity loss, ocean sustainability and One Health.

The Editorial Assistant will be responsible for supporting the editorial and communications team with copywriting, content production and editorial tasks for the EJN website, newsletter and social media channels. They will also support with programmatic work including reviewing grant applications, onboarding grantees and administrative tasks. The Editorial Assistant will be comfortable with both working independently and liaising between the various EJN teams and personnel working around the world, which will occasionally require joining calls and meetings during evening hours.

This is a full-time position expected to start in May 2026 and last for an estimated 10 months, with the possibility of being extended.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Providing editorial support for the programme, which may include republishing grantee stories on the EJN website; drafting and publishing EJN opportunities, project pages and updates; drafting tipsheets and journalist resources; drafting network achievements and grantee awards; and updating the staff page.
  • Supporting the EJN comms team with social media and outreach. Tasks may include creating and scheduling content as well as managing paid ads on Bluesky, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn; email outreach for EJN opportunities; and managing EJNet Google and WhatsApp groups.
  • Helping to maintain and grow EJN’s YouTube channel by uploading videos and creating playlists.
  • Supporting the creation of the monthly email newsletter, including keeping up-to-date with awards won by current and former grantees, drafting copy and building the newsletter on Brevo.
  • Contributing ideas for expanding outreach in key coverage areas, including identifying partnerships with media organizations and relevant networks to promote EJN opportunities.
  • Supporting with drafting project updates for the EJN website, including reaching out to colleagues for quotes and reviewing edits with the EJN Editorial Associate.
  • Supporting the judging of grant applications and notification of outcomes.
  • Supporting with onboarding grantees, including sending award emails, completing vetting, confirming references, creating onboarding packets and drafting grantee contract.
  • Supporting with international travel logistics, including gathering flight options and creating logistics packets.
  • Monitoring PSC contracts and hours worked, processing contract renewals.
  • Supporting with making payments to grantees, including preparing documents and seeking approval from budget holders.

Qualifications

Required
  • Professional proficiency in English (written and spoken).
  • Ability to follow documented processes, written and verbal instructions.
  • Familiarity with Windows operating environment; previous experience with tools such as Microsoft Outlook and Teams an asset.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, BlueSky and YouTube) and experience using them in a personal or professional context.
  • University degree or equivalent experience in media, environmental issues or international development.
Preferred
  • Experience in editorial work, including copywriting and website content management (e.g., on WordPress).
  • Familiarity with tools such as Airtable, Canva, Loomly, Brevo, Google Analytics, and WordPress.
  • Experience with social media analytics.
  • Design skills and experience creating graphics and videos for social media.
  • Understanding of how media is created, distributed and consumed across both traditional and digital platforms and how different audiences engage with it.
  • Fluency in languages other than English a plus.
  • Experience with TikTok.
