Guided by our values of Respect & Integrity, Customer Centricity, Care, and Teamwork, the Deputy Depot Team Leader – Delivery Vehicle Driver role combines hands-on delivery driving with operational and people leadership responsibilities. Reporting to the Depot Team Leader or Transport Manager, you will support the day-to-day running of the depot, deputising in the Team Leader’s absence, while also operating company delivery vehicles (Category B). You will lead by example on the road and in the depot, ensuring safe, compliant, and efficient delivery operations alongside excellent customer service.
Key Responsibilities
- Team Leadership & Depot Operations
- Support the Depot Team Leader in supervising, motivating, and supporting a team of drivers to meet performance targets and service levels.
- Act as deputy during periods of absence, ensuring continuity of depot operations.
- Assist with daily planning of routes, workloads, and schedules to optimise efficiency and meet customer demand.
- Support morning vehicle loading and driver briefings, ensuring routes and priorities are clearly communicated.
- Be responsible for closing checks where required, ensuring vehicles, paperwork, and depot activities are completed.
- Support monitoring of driver standards, compliance, and vehicle condition.
- Assist with managing returns, collections, and depot-based movements in line with company systems and SOPs.
- Driving & Delivery (Delivery Vehicles)
- Operate company delivery vehicles (vans) to transport goods safely and efficiently to customer locations.
- Follow planned routes and delivery schedules, adapting where required to meet operational needs.
- Load, secure, unload, and deliver goods accurately and safely, ensuring OTIF (On Time In Full) delivery.
- Lead by example with driving standards, professionalism, and customer interaction.
- Use navigation systems and driving apps to optimise routes and comply with telematics requirements.
- Safety, Compliance & Standards
- Carry out all duties in accordance with Health & Safety legislation, company policies, and safe systems of work.
- Conduct daily pre-use and post-use vehicle checks, reporting defects or issues promptly.
- Ensure vehicles are driven in line with statutory road traffic regulations and company driving standards.
- Ensure vehicles remain clean, tidy, roadworthy, and smoke-free at all times.
- Use company equipment (vehicles, phones, systems) responsibly, safely, and as trained.
- Support a culture of safety, compliance, and accountability within the driver team.
- Vehicle Care, Documentation & Systems
- Perform basic vehicle maintenance checks (oil, tyres, lights, fluids).
- Maintain accurate records of deliveries, mileage, fuel usage, and incidents.
- Ensure delivery documentation is completed accurately and signed as required.
- Support the use of depot and transport systems for reporting, scheduling, and KPI tracking.
- Customer Service & Representation
- Provide a professional, courteous, and respectful service to customers at all times.
- Act as a positive ambassador for Leader Online, representing company values on the road and at customer sites.
- Handle customer queries or issues appropriately, escalating where required.
- Company Contribution
- Support departmental and business KPIs.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across transport and depot operations.
- Assist with warehouse or depot activities as required to support the wider business.
Key Requirements
- Full UK driving licence (Category B).
- Clean or near-clean driving record.
- Previous experience in a delivery driving role.
- Experience supporting or leading teams within a transport, depot, or operational environment.
- Strong working knowledge of UK road traffic laws and safe driving practices.
- Confident communicator with the ability to lead by example.
- Good organisational and time management skills.
- Basic mechanical awareness for vehicle checks.
- Reliable, punctual, and flexible with a proactive, can-do attitude.
Desirable
- Previous experience deputising or acting up into a team leader or supervisory role.
- Experience using routing, telematics, or transport management systems.
- Forklift Truck (FLT) licence.
