Aims of the Learning Review

As an ISP Learning Review Team Lead, you will play a leading part in the Learning Review process. The Learning Review process has the following aims:

  • To validate and celebrate schools' judgements in their self-evaluation against the 9 criteria of the LIP.
  • To support schools in strategically moving towards Mastering by identifying and agreeing priorities and actions.
  • To provide learning opportunities and professional growth to senior leaders across ISP in participating as a member of a review team.

Role Profile Duties

Every review team lead is expected to lead the Learning Review process for their assigned school. You will lead your team review members as they undertake their duties as detailed in the Team Member Role Profile and the Learning Review Handbook. More specifically, you will be expected to:

  • Pre-review
    • Engage in team and lead training sessions, including completing any tasks set.
    • Actively liaise with the Head of Learning Reviews to understand your specific role and assigned Learning Review dates.
    • Be responsible for timely initial contact with the school and liaison with school leaders in the preparation of the review.
    • Build positive and trusting relationships with leaders in school and the review team through the review process.
    • Be responsible for ensuring that the evidence folders are maintained and accessible and that schools are aware of key deadlines for submitting information needed for the review.
    • Contact review team members (as allocated by the Head of Learning Reviews) and liaise with them in the preparation of the Review.
    • Lead the collection of evidence in order that the team can contribute to the reflections document in good time for the pre-review call.
    • Delegate any areas of focus to members of the review team.
    • Write a draft plan of the review including delegating team members to interviews and other activities and ensuring the sufficient range of lesson visits take place to make accurate judgments.
  • During the review
    • Lead the pre-review briefing meeting to ensure that the team understands the review structure and their responsibilities throughout the review.
    • Lead the Review Team as they conduct learning visits in a professional and skilled way so that clear evidence of learning is collected and recorded.
    • Ensure that sufficient evidence is collected and recorded by the team to form sound judgments in identifying the impact of learning and establishing factors which influence it.
    • Gather and use questions to obtain further evidence and insight as part of interviews with stakeholder groups.
    • Ensure that all members can contribute positively to team discussions and support or challenge decisions using clear evidence.
    • Ensure that decisions are consensual and reflect the balanced opinions of the team.
    • Sensitively manage conversations with leaders and stakeholders to avoid direct challenge or undermine school policies or initiatives based upon other practice or opinion.
    • Ensure that the Principal of the school is appropriately informed of key evidence needs as they arise during the review such that opportunity is given for the school to provide evidence in support of conclusions.
    • Deal effectively with any concerns or complaints raised by the school and gather sufficient evidence to enable the Head of Learning Reviews to conduct any subsequent investigation.
    • Use the school’s/ISP safeguarding policies to report effectively in any case in which you feel anyone is at risk of harm.
    • Lead post-review conversations with teams of senior leaders to help them understand and agree priorities outlined from the review.
    • Prepare key documents which will be used to share evidence and conclusions following practice detailed within the Learning Review Handbook.
  • Post-review
    • Lead the writing and proof-reading of the review report within the set deadline following guidelines set out in training.
    • Liaise with the Head of Learning Reviews in any case of needing more information or clarity about the writing of the report.
    • Ensure the completion of a team review evaluation questionnaire after receipt of feedback from the Head Reviewer.
    • Write a brief report on any team member who is new to the review process to help their professional development.
    • Take part in any review meetings, update training or review team development activities and opportunities as required during the year.

Person Specification, Essential Experience, Skills & Qualities

  • You have a proven record of experience and impact as a team member of Learning Reviews (or equivalent review process).
  • You have been the principal or senior school leader with evidence of effectiveness in raising the quality of standards.
  • You have excellent communication skills.
  • You are fluent in English (at least B2) and (desirably) have B2 or above in an additional language relevant to the reviewing school, for example Spanish, French, Italian, Arabic, Portuguese.
  • You have an excellent knowledge of the LIP and are skilled in evaluating evidence for each of the 9 criteria in terms of its visibility, and impact on learning.
  • You can formulate agreement around conclusions and strategies ensuring that all participants are able to express their perspectives.
  • You will be experienced in conducting learning visits including leading pre and post visit conversations and using the evidence gathered to draw conclusions about impact on learning and factors affecting learning.
  • You have completed all necessary Safeguarding and Child Protection training and checks.
  • You are passionate about education in an international context.
  • You are highly organised and able to work to tight deadlines with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • You can maintain appropriate levels of confidentiality and represent an independent perspective when engaging with community members of other schools.
  • Show sensitivity and discretion in managing conversations with stakeholders so that wider ISP practice or that of other ISP schools is not used in direct comparison with practice in the school being reviewed.
  • You have excellent communication, interpersonal and intercultural skills.
  • You are a team player, with a proactive work ethic, and a problem-solving approach.
  • You are flexible, self-aware and resilient while collaborating with others to achieve shared goals.
  • You are confident in using Microsoft Teams, Google Drive and associated tools.
