The Monetary and Capital Markets Department (MCM) of the International Monetary Fund has an opening for a Financial Sector Expert/Senior Financial Sector Expert in its Global Markets Analysis (GA) Division. The post is based in GA\’s London office, as part of a small team.
The key functions of the GA division include monitoring and assessing developments in global financial markets and systemically important financial institutions, analyzing risks to global financial stability and helping to ensure that the Fund takes consistent and well-informed views about financial risks and policies to mitigate these risks.
The main responsibilities of the analyst position are to:

  • Analyze macro-financial developments and financial stability risks for major European economies and contributing to thematic notes.
  • Contribute to the analysis presented in the IMF\’s flagship Global Financial Stability Report as well as analysis presented in various research blogs or ad hoc reports.
  • Build tools and develop databases to support high frequency market surveillance across the main asset classes with a focus on developed and emerging markets in the European time zone.
  • Contribute to GA\’s daily markets monitor (Global Markets Monitor or GMM) and Early London Update (internal report) with regular coverage of mature and emerging markets primarily in Europe but also in Middle East and Africa (EMEA).
  • Support the IMF\’s outreach activities in London.
  • Develop financial market contacts to obtain context for asset price movements, gauge emerging stability risks, and brief senior MCM management.
  • Help manage the practical issues associated with the London office including administrative, security and IT issues

Minimum Qualifications

  • A master\’s degree in finance, economics, econometrics or a related field.
  • At least 4 years of relevant professional work experience in financial markets, or macroeconomic analysis or supervision, acquired in financial institutions, public sector or at an international organization.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of financial markets and proven ability to analyze and interpret asset market developments.
  • Strong analytical skills. Adept at conducting high-quality data analysis both independently and in teams.
  • Ability to deliver concise, insightful written analysis under tight deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in an international environment and engage with colleagues across time zones.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work autonomously.
  • Strong skills in Excel and data management. Candidates with advanced knowledge of econometric packages (EViews, MATLAB, Stata, Python, R, or similar) will be preferred.
  • Knowledge of economic/financial databases and information services (e.g., Bloomberg, CEIC, Haver Analytics)

This vacancy shall be filled by a 3-year Term appointment in accordance with the Fund\’s new employment rules that took effect on May 1, 2015.
