Research Fellow and Managing Editor, The Adelphi Series Research Fellow and Managing Editor, The Adelphi Series Hours: Full time Contract: Fixed-term, one year Location: London, Berlin or Washington, DC The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) is the world’s leading international think tank providing independent and objective information and analysis on military, geopolitical and geo-economic developments that could lead to conflict. The Adelphi Series is an authoritative series of books on issues of politics and international security, and represents the Institute\’s principal contribution to policy-relevant, original academic research. Around four-six books are published a year. The Institute is seeking to appoint a Managing Editor for The Adelphi Series, who will also serve as a Research Fellow, to be based in an IISS office located in either London, Berlin or Washington DC, depending on the successful candidate’s eligibility to work. This full-time position will report to the Editor of the Adelphi Series for duties related to the Series, and to the relevant Research Director for research-related work. Responsibilities Support the Editor and, in consultation with the Editor, commission books, review manuscripts and conduct substantive ‘structural’ editing (providing detailed feedback, comments and suggested revisions to the manuscript; engaging the authors on issues of argument, substance and structure; and engaging in hands-on editing and re-writing if this is required to amend issues of style or content). Oversee the production of books in collaboration with colleagues elsewhere in the Institute, especially in the Editorial, Design and Communications departments. Work with internal or external peer reviewers, and other internal or external stakeholders. Contribute and/or help to organise internal and external events relating to the Series. Contribute to the future direction of the Series through consultation with the Editor. In their research role, the selected candidate will contribute to the Institute’s work and profile through written scholarship, commentary and analysis for IISS and outside publications, as well as IISS events, public lectures, roundtables and research fundraising. Requirements PhD-level knowledge of international relations, history, politics or a related field; or equivalent journalistic or practitioner experience. A body of published work demonstrating writing talent and significant intellectual accomplishment. Eligibility to work in either the United Kingdom; Germany; or the United States. Superlative, native-level command of spoken and written English. Meticulous editing and excellent organisational and communication skills. The ability to work both under direction and independently, as required. Remuneration The IISS provides a full employment package. More information about working at the IISS can be found here .
